Rode my Adventure without earplugs yesterday and noticed an odd noise being generated between 2500 & 3000rpm. Best described as a whine or 'chatter' it appears to be transmission related as the engine sounds fine beneath it. Noise appears most noticable in 4th, 5th & 6th and disappears once over 3000rpm.

having heard one or two tales of faulty gearboxes, is this normal or should I be taking the bike to the dealer. Incidentally, the bike is one month old, has a 'normal' 6th i.e. not overdrive and has covered approx 1200 miles.

Any suggestions?

Get rid of the bike !

This sounds terminal...but I will buy the bike off you for £6000 to help you out.

Regards,

Luke.

I'm only guessing, but I reckon this is your first BMW?

When I got my 1150 in February, I was convinced there was something wrong with the transmission. The previous owner (the bike was 7 months old) was deaf...so that just added my concern. He's never have known. I posted several similar posts over a period of weeks as well as going to see my dealer.

Bottom line? The GS took a long while for me to get used to. I've had a very long lne of Jap 4's and especially Susuki's which are known for great gearboxes. Now, about 7,000 miles later, I am convinced there is nothing wrong with it at all. I think they're highly quirky bikes. In a strange way (and I must sound very sad indeed), I have really grown to love all the quirks. I've been biking for 20 years and never had a love affair with a bike like this one. Even my wife is jealous!

The problem for me is very similar to that which you describe. It's particularly bad in 4th between 2 and 3500 rpm. It's been said by scores of people before me (and I am somewhat amused I am now saying it), if you can hear it over the earplugs, there's likely a problem...but if it sounds fine with them in - just enjoy the bike.

I also hated the gearbox. It was awful and needed a firm (like VERY firm boot). I had the gear linkage tightened up, which helped a little, but I can't believe the difference as I have put the miles on. AT 14K, it's pretty nice now. Never as good as my old Susie's, but nice to use.

For what it's worth however...take it to the dealer anyway and insist they listen. It's under warranty and most dealers would be happy to do that. Remember they get paid on warranty work, so they would have no reason just to flog you off. It's worth it as an additional measure to put your mind at rest.

By the way...if you are still unhappy, I can do better than Luke, I'll offer you £6,500. In fact thinking about it, sell it now while it's still worth something. Quick, before i change my mind! :D

Richard

BMW gearboxes are crap when they're new and crap when they're old. They don't get any better.
I'd try and get a ride on another one to see if it's any different.
