I've used an optimate for the last two years on my Odyssey battery, works fine. I also use the optimate on my wifes MX5 gel battery.
As said before, just don't use a normal car battery charger on the gel/dry batteries.

I have an Odyssey battery in my 1150GS courtesy Motorworks. I found that my Optimate charger would not fully charge it. When I queried this with Motorworks they told me that the Optimate was not capable of charging the Odyssey battery and sold me a CTEK Multi XS 3600. This has a specific setting suitable for gel batteries and the battery is now always fully charged.

This was a few years ago so the new versions of the Optimate may be fine for Odyssey batteries now.

This is true -They'll keep on odyssey charged at whatever it's state is, but not 100%. And if an odessey goes flat, an optimate or similar charger won't fully recharge it to 100% .

You need a full whack type of car battery charger to get a full charge into an odyssey.

Older Optimates and less sophisticated chargers charge batteries to 13.2V, but AGM batteries, like the Odyssey, need 13.5V for a full charge - the newest Optimate IIISP will charge to 13.5V, according to the Optimate website.

There's also the issue about kick-starting charge into a heavily depleted AGM battery, and I think that the 20V initial charging phase is aimed at doing that as well. The website says that it will only pump out 20V if it doesn't detect any vehicle wiring, so it looks like you need to disconnect the battery and use the croc clips to do that.

I've been using Optimates for years, partly because they are completely up-front and publish details about their charging process and have a decent set of FAQs on their website.
