I know suppliers recommend the C-tek charger for the odyssey but are they really necessary.

I've just fitted an odyssey to the RS and wondered if an alternative trickle charger would do the job without damaging the battery?

Battery charger

Hi, I'v used both the Optimate and BMW own charger on my 1986 Dakar with an Oddy battery, any one should work fine.

Thanks for the responses.

I,ve got the optimate on the 1150 and an old Oxford Optimiser no the RS with the Odessey.

My bike lives outside, summer and winter, and it starts ok, without ever going on a trickle charger, I really don't see the need unless you have a wired in alarm on the bike, and you don't use it for weeks?

The RS has a clock which is on permanently so is a drain on the battery. Mine had a micro switch fitted to isolate it when not being used for extended periods.

When my Odyssey went totally flat I connected a C-Tek but it didn't like it and started buzzing. So I put the Optimate on it and it charged it up fine. Took over two weeks though!

There's a spade connector to my clock live wire which I disconnect so the clock drain isn't an issue.
