Are there any other options other than the Odyssey PC 535, or is it worth stumping up the extra cash? It looks like Motorworks are the way to go if the Odyssey is the one.

Also a new dual purpose tyre, it's been done to death I know but on Anakees at the moment and want to know if its worth changing.

I would also like to know if the Oddysey is fine with an Optimate as motorworks recommend another charger.

Yes and yes :thumb

I've been using Optimates on Oddysey batteries for quite a while with no probs. IIRC if an Oddysey battery becomes almost totaly discharged you need a 'car' battery type charger to get it going again :nenau but I've never had to find out so not sure.

Watch your charging voltage...

According to the Odyssey literature I got with my battery, the chief concern with AGM batteries is peak charging voltage. While the AGM construction can effectively take huge amounts of charging amperage (unlike traditional lead-acid batteries), the peak voltage of the charging rig should never exceed 15 volts. Apparently higher voltages can cause the internal valves to discharge hydrogen and other internal gasses, that are not replaced and this can shorten the life of the battery.
While the Optimate is fine (may take a little longer from discharge), my automotive 10 amp charger has peak voltages in the 16 volt range. YMMV

Thanks.

Oh dear, bike eats another £100 then :o

Well, it is £105 plus £6-odd for the postage, but as mentioned elsewhere.... worth it, for taking the hassle and prep out of the job.

Got my Odysey in less than 24 hrs.

Motorworks also pre prepare it, so the fin shaving has been done, and the replacement stainless strap, and its padding are included.

More importantly, re-route the positive lead around near the tank, as per their photo on the destructions.

Battery problems

What am I doing right or wrong? I never seem to have these battery problems and have used BMW batteries for 30 years. I connect up an Optimate if I leave the bike for more than a few days (very rare) I NEVER have an alarm fitted and never leave a GPS on the bike;

It looks like I'm going away for a while at short notice again(So much for looking forward to a summer on 2 wheels). Is it worth getting an Odyssey and leaving it in the bike while I'm away or just leaving it as is minus a battery.

Any previou experience/top tips will be gratefully received as ever!

I agree!!

Optimate chargers

After having battery problems I emailed Accumate with a few questions - their response:

1) The OptiMate is compatible with all type of lead acid starter battery. Please note that the ETX batteries (BMW OE fit) are an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and not a gel electrolyte. These are the most common type of powersport batteries available and partly the reason why the OptiMate was developed. There has never been a reported incident of an OptiMate causing a battery defect and with over 1'000'000 have been produced.

2) If you charger is showing test results (Green Good or Red Suspect) then the charger will be functioning correctly. So there should be no need to replace it.

3) There have been quite a few changes over the years (even within the OptiMate III's lifetime), most of which are very minor improvements and the only significant changes with the introduction of the IIISP are; Increased ingress protection to IP42 making the charger Splash Proof, the end if the recharge stages are indicated by the charge LED flashing and charge current is now reduced at high ambient temperatures.
