Hi GSer's,
I am about to purchase some aluminium luggage for my recently purchased R1150GS - full pannier set and top case. However the decision making process is somewhat more complicated than I had originally hoped. Can some of you help?

I really like the OE Adventure luggage. I have read a thread here which rates them quite highly. I like the single key aspect, plus the fact it is the original set. The other option is the Touratech Zega cases, which I understand are also popular, but for some reason I don't like the look of so much.

Adventure luggage:
Does the adventure luggage fit a helmet in the top case?
Is the capacity restrictive? As I understand it is less than most luggage sets. What are the drawbacks of this set (if any)?
What do you guys/girls like about it?

Touratech luggage:
What are the drawbacks of this set (if any)?
What do you guys/girls like about it?
Is it secure? Is it easy to add and remove?

Also I should say I didn't like the Hepco & Becker so much and I can't afford the metal mule.

I think I'm finding it so hard to decide because I can't go and see the Touratech (The dealer is in Swansea, I'm in the Heathrow area). Does anyone know of anywhere that I can see the luggage first hand - either fitted to a bike or in a showroom?

Thanks for your help.

  1. Yes you can fit a full face helmet in the topcase.
  2. Capacity I would not say is restrictive, the pannier volume is less than TT for example but not enough to be an issue.
  3. Downside are the cost of a new set and it's wider than TT but it does mean you can fit a full face helmet in either pannier which is not something the competition can claim.
  4. One of the other features of the system is being able to mount a pannier on the top box rack for additional day to day capacity.

Its a personal choice at the end of the day what suits one will not suit another and all that. :augie

Welcome to the collective BTW :thumb

I will go for the OE Adventure ones they are good looking high quality and you can fit a full face helmet in any of the luggage:thumb

If it is the standard GS1150 you have - Remember, that you must have the folding racks for the 1150GSA luggage - they are not self-supporting and in fact - sit on platforms.

The standard luggage "touring" is the moulded black polythene cases, using the same carcase, with one of three widths in lids (City, Touring, Global in order of widths).

Not sure how much a full-monte Adventure set will cost second hand, but I'd be surprised if it was less than £500 (3 pc)

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the prompt response. It's funny what you say about the top box as the guy at the dealership said it wasn't possible, and this was the sticking point for me. I think I'll go for the OE set. I realise the cost is high, but I haven't seen a good set of second hand ones for a while now.

Blackal - Regarding your points on the folding racks - I'm not sure I understand fully - I have been quoted the following parts:

C71607668666 Foot Rest (to replace existing)
C71607664556 Carrier Sys (Frame for panniers)
C71607669717 Alu case Left
C71607669718 Alu Case Right
C71607664552 Bracket for top case
C71607669719 Topcase
C71607658463 Lock Cyl x 6
C71607677976 Lug holder x 3 (Hold the cases on more securely)

Another company also included this in the quote:
C46547678034 Luggage gri (this is the only description)

Is that what you are referring to?

Thanks

ZB -

Looks like you are being quoted for the whole assembly :thumb2

You can see from the pic below, that there are locking plates under each pannier. These fold up against the bike when the cases are removed.

Something about the original cases is "just right" - the dimensions, the rounded corners ?

71607664552 is the part number for the complete luggage rack and fittings, you don't need an additional luggage grid.

If I was you I'd seriously consider becoming a site sponsor so you can access the For Sale and Wanted section, the luggage appears on there now and then. :augie

Hi again,
Thanks for the advice from you all. I placed the order today so will pick up the cases on friday and have something to do this weekend!

Great photo btw, or should I say great looking bike. Like you say there's something about the OE cases that look great.
