This is a long shot, does anyone know anywhere within an hours drive from Southampton where I can teach my sixteen year old daughter how to drive. Must be private land as I don't want the boys in blue showing an interest, quite happy to pay.

Thanks in advance.

Could be a school or business car park that isn't used out of hours, there must be somewhere.

What you really want is a disused airfield.

Your best bet appears to be Thorney Island on the eastern side of Havant. Easily visible in Google Earth, doesn't seem to be used for much in the way of aviation, still has tarmac runways, so you won't duff up your motor

Thanks Stuart, I'll check that out. Must of been raining in Scotland?

No idea - I live in Stockwell in London! (I do however have the good fortune to be Scottish). But my Dad did the same thing with me, at Crail airfield in Fife. I have a Google Earth (.kml) file with all the airfields, disused and current, in the UK, so I loaded that up and had a look. Thorney Island looks like your best bet as it's one of the few I could find with tarmac runways that's

a) not now a serious airfield (although I've no idea what the access is)
b) built over
c) still owned by the MOD

Depending on your car there are a few grass strips still about - the old RAF Beaulieu is your best bet for that.

EDIT: there's a typo in the above post - should read

c) NOT still owned by the MOD

Unfortunately Thorney Island is still MOD, guy on the gate wasn't impressed that I didn't turn my light off on approach. Didn't make it to Beaulieu, will keep searching.
