Hi all,

I am looking to get my gs off road a little. I havent got a clue where I can ride. I am looking for something not too challenging to start with, maybe forrest or moors type lanes or tracks, not too much water or mud to start with, I have a little off road experience but mostly on smaller bikes like xr 400's I am not afraid of having a go so if anyone could recomend some lanes or maybe even ride some with me I would be gratefull (I'll buy the breakfast !!). I have joined the trf but it seems to be taking forever to get any info through!

Somersets pretty shite now since 99% of the rupps were regraded to restricted byways (still ride some of them though), don't really know about Devon. If you want a nice weekend with a days off roading on GS's come alog to Princetown on the first weekend in Sept for the c*** meeting. Camping behind the Plume of Feathers, just turn up Friday afternoon.

Surprised Brian Sussex has not been more helpful, think he still is the Rights of Way man for the Devon TRF...normally pretty approachable and very knowledgeable on the area. Try and get in touch with him and he should certainly help you out for the Devon area http://www.briansussex.me.uk/ .

The TRF are getting/got a funny over giving map details and suggesting legal places to ride for a while now and I was personally struggling to find reasons for my membership fee to them. They do keep on about all the good good work they are doing and the only ones fighting to save the lanes.....I have just yet to see or hear the results of there work. This may be why you have not had a good response from them.

You could try going to your local clubs meeting armed with your local areas OS maps and highlight pen and getting friendly or asking if there is anybody that can help mark up some legal trails on your map with/for you.

So that joe public can exploit the good-will and hard work of the TRF without contributing to their funds? Without the TRF there might not be much green-laning in the future.
£40 subscription seems like good value for all the TRF offers.

Mmm and it's unlikely alot of what the TRF guys ride around here would be well suited to a GS and you certainly don't want to try them alone (it took about 5 people to get my 1150 back down when I had an off last year).

Go to GS weekends and the off road rides are designed for big bikes and help is always on hand.

Some nice stuff in south Cornwall arond the old tin mines.

Brian Sussex is/was an old airhead owner and IIRC used to be a member here...it was partly this and his position in the Devon TRF that lead me to point you in his direction. As others have mentioned make sure you tell them that you are looking for GS friendly tracks and not WEC extreme special tests :D

The debate over TRF actions in the 'Fight' are an age old dispute, my old local TRF group could of taken HCC to court over it actions regarding TRO's but no the top TRF guys kept the money for a rainy day and looks like we loose more lanes as a result. I'll keep me subs which I think the new PR manager put up to £45.

If by "top TRF guys" you mean TRF national, I can understand your frustration at some of their decisions but a lot of effort IS made by volunteers at the group level. The fight against a TRO on a byway can be postponed but usually the battles on other lanes cannot
