….. I need something that can plan routes for my mountain biking trails offroad, which again I hope MRA can do.

I have just updated my Garmin Edge Explore 2 to use better maps from Talkytoaster so hopefully it will be compatible.

An excellent resource for trail/hill walkers, green laners and offroaders:

Fresh thread created.

I must get with the times and download MRA, I could never get on well with Garmins own mapping software.

Hopefully this is better plus I need something that can plan routes for my mountain biking trails offroad, which again I hope MRA can do.

OSMand is probably better for your use case as it is based on OSM and is good at creating tracks. However, if you didn't get on with Garmin's software, I'd say OSMand has an even steeper learning curve. That said the free phone app has enough functionality to make tracks for mountain bike trails.

Thanks. for the tip. I just want a simple mapping app that I can visually drag and drop waypoints on screen to build/edit a route. Nothing too technical as I have neither the time nor inclination to go balls deep into complicated software.

I posted up something in the gps and other devices thread. There is an off road mode for route/track creation in MRA, but it’s not great.
Better to create your off road route elsewhere and then navigate on the device.

After asking around on cycle forums etc, it seems that I have found what I'm after, and its free.

"GPS Training" have free software intended for hill walkers, cyclists etc that can be used for browsing OS maps and route planning. They have excellent YouTube tutorials online so hopefully even a luddite like me can get results, (episode 1 basic overview shown below, others with more in-depth information available.)

I hope this is a handy resource for anybody else seeking to create their own GPS routes for off-road activities such as walking, fell running, horse riding, gravel biking or MTB riding.

With the plethora of GPS devices available like smart watches, cycle computers or maybe just smart phone apps it could be useful.

Have a look at GPS training
They have a free OS map planning tool that you can drag & drop waypoints onto off-road mapping for walks and MTB routes

EDIT
You have found it already 👍

JB Thanks very much, you are 30 seconds too late, I just discovered this myself via cycle forums and I'm starting the learning curve. :thumb2

Its brilliant, and so simple !! ::clap:clap:clap

Open the app on PC or tablet, browse the OS map on screen, find a start point you like, click on map to create more waypoints, save route as a .GPX and then import to the GPS device.

Why didn't I know about this before ????

Many thanks for posting this, having looked at the videos & how simple & intuitive it is, makes you realise how dreadful 'Basecamp' really is.

A tip if you are using a Garmin device that shows a "Latest" folder in its subdirectories using Windows File Explorer (my new Edge Explore 2 cycle computer has this)......

Just drop your completed .GPX file into this "Latest" folder and when you disconnect the USB cable, the device does a refresh of its directories and saves the new route into internal memory and asks on screen if you want to start using it.
