Oh dear, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

This ^^^^^.
Well done Steve, you've done yourself proud.
:beerjug:

BTW, have you found somewhere to watch the footy tonight.⚽

Chapeau...as we cyclists say to one another.
Did you have an idea you'd be doing a weeks trip with 50 and 60 mile hilly days...when you first started on those short flat rides not that long ago.....
Me..and many more on here are hugely impressed.

Now for the worst part of any ferry trip. Stood waiting around until 10pm and I can get a shower and bed.

Actually…. No, I’d expected that a 160 miles from europort to Calais would take 5 or 6 days of flat cycling.
It was only on day 2 I thought I could go a bit further. The hills are horrible though. There was a 1.7 mile steep hill leaving villers sur mer today. A real killer.
I’ve a lot to reflect on from this trip.

Well I’m on guillame de normandie now and what a nice ferry. The cabin is better than the ferry from Hull. But it should be as it’s a newish ship. I’m laid here on my bunk at 00.30hrs thinking what a positive experience all this has been

People who've never cycled (except as a kid) have little or no comprehension of just how much effort goes into dragging your body up even a gentle slope, let alone a proper hill. Ride a random wolds road on a motorbike and you're forgiven for thinking that it is flattish, maybe a bit undulating...revert to pedal power and every little slight rise in the road is felt in the legs and lungs (It's why pro climbers weigh sub 10stone)
Any older GSer contemplating it, give it a go. A few miles 2 or 3 times a week can work wonders...physical as well as mental health benefitting. What's not to like ?

Well it’s getting a bit dis jointed. I can’t get the overnight from Ouistreham then a van home……
BUT I am struggling to get a van late on Friday if I continue on to Cherbourg.
Surely almost any mid sized car would do, just drop the font wheel and it'll go in the back with seats down

The Stelvio Pass comes to mind and the cyclists who I passed on the way up. They arrived on the on the summit as I was having a coffee. Deep respect to them, a gobsmacking effort.
On my way down there was even more on their way up.
Another league.

OK , I’m home now and have had an hour to contemplate my endeavours.
I did a total of 378 miles from door to door. I also climbed 10938 miles, I mean feet ( it felt like miles though 😃)
Did I enjoy it ? Yes
Was it a challenge, and did it take me out of my comfort zone ? Yes, very much so.
Would I do it again ? Yes, but in a different format . Fewer miles a day possibly more days. I think doing it on the spur of the moment was a bit silly. It left me under pressure and not able to balance my needs for decent hotels and a bit less mileage.
If I do it again I’ll start planning a lot earlier.
I learned / sorted several things whilst away from the silly things like handle bar positions to the more important things like hydration. On one day lunch was a banana and a beer. Bad move……..won’t be having bananas for lunch again :nenau
The biggest problem is me. I got bored once the cycling was done and it made foe long days. I’d have. Loved to have gone further but it’d just about done my head in by the time I got home. One of my by lines is ‘life’s adventures are best shared’ and this sort of adventure makes it crystal clear why I’m such a grumpy old twat when on my own.
NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS. IVE PUT ON. COUPLE OF KG’s.
For the next one I think it’ll be a cycling for softies trip or a barge n bike trip.
