m 12adv has developed a leak. the rear bevel box is leaking oil by the big hole. does anyone know whats likely to be the problem. I notied the other day the handling felt different in that it seemed more sensative to the road and today theres oil all down the side of the bevel box. Its only done 16 1/2k .:o

Your bearings are shot.

Take it back, demand a similar courtesy bike.

(Or ask for an upgrade to an 1150GSA SE ;) )

Ask politely but firmly for a large discount on your next service.

Job Done.

this is interesting

when it was new i found the rear wheel after 50 miles or so would have about 1mm of play ar the rim. i took it bak to bluebell who said it was normal. has anyone else found this or had a bearing go at similar milage.

Here's a link on the oil leak, not necessarily related to bearing failure so ignore naughty Fanum ;)

I take it you are talking about side to side play? When I first joined the forum, 2 ears ago, there were quite a few threads on the subject. IIRC some posts mentioned being told by dealers that there was a permisible amount of movement but the consensus here was that none was how it should be.

I check mine from time to time and there is no movement.

I got a new rear drive box, last month, under warranty due to poor paint finish. It had just developed an oil leak (28000 miles) so that was good timing :) Interestingly, on my ride home, I noticed that there was far less back lash in the drive and consequently gear changes were a lot smoother.

Unfortunatly I was knocked off the bike four miles from the dealer and won't be able to ride it for a bit so can't coment further :mmmm

I think Fanum was partly right, since an oil leak on an 1150 does generally mean the bearing is on the way out.
I've seen a few very low mileage 1200s with a slight weep from the rear oil seal, which doesn't necessarily mean it's the bearing:)

You're right....but he did mention handling (which unless oil had got on the tyre wouldn't be affected by the weeping oil) and he went on to describe a mil movement in the rear wheel.

The bearings are shot.

:)

You're right too:hug

yep mine

looks just like the one on the link. kinda pissed me off a bit as in 16500 miles it on its third rear disk and this one warped now, and the bevel box i leaking. its due a serv in 1500 miles but sounds like it needed one 1000 miles ago, runs real lumpy and at tikover (sorry lost my letter see again) it stutters and misses. should i dump it and go buy a KTM:o

An oil leak is likely but not definately to be a pre-cursor to final drive failure. My seal started leaking after about 14.5k. It was replced under warranty but about 500 miles later I noticed similar handling probs - tracking over whilte lines and tarmac joints. I checked the back wheel and found noticable play between the wheel and swingarm. This resulted in a new final drive and rear disc under warranty. Note that the play was much less noticable when the bike was cold. It needed a good run along a motorway to get the shaft oil nice and hot.

If a dealer fobs you off saying that some play is permissible point out that any play in the back wheel is an MOT failure.

someone needs to suss out whether BM have done a mod to the FD as it seems to be the only problem affecting most 1200s. Otherwise a lot of people are going to be faced with some big bills

An extended warranty on Batteries, oil seals & Final drives. will show that BMW care . You will have a problem with one or more of these if you keep your GS more than a couple years..:rob

I'm just waiting for the FD on mine for the set.:D
