Good question, I've just bought an old R100RT which came with a spare, apparently beyond repair, gearbox.
The previous owner had had a problem with the gearbox, took it to a local bike shop who tested the 'box and advised it needed replacement. The previous owner purchased outright a complete re-conditioned 'box and had it fitted.
Out of curiosity,I stripped the old 'box this fternoon, just one bearing had partially lost it's cage causing the balls to bunch up and throw the shafts slightly out of line.Absolutely no damage to the shafts, gearwheels, etc.
I haven't the heart to tell the chap.
