Just wondering about winding out my Ohlins shocks a bit to make the bike a little taller. Is it ok the wind up the preload about an inch or so?

My back shock had a remote adjuster with S <-> H on the top so I presume this means to make the compression "soft" or "hard". I presume I'll need to take the shocks off the bike to do this.

Any info appreciated.....

The shock does not have compression adjustment, just pre-load and rebound. The preload is just used to increase the height at the rear to compensate for additional weight such as luggage or a passenger, it does not change the compression of the shock.

Ah right, maybe my rear one changes the rebound. I wound it to both extremes and the bike didn't rise or lower so I guess it has nothing to do with preload.

Errr nope, the rebound is adjusted by the knurled wheel at the bottom of the shock, the remote pre-load is what your adjusting, can you feel any persistence?

Absolutely none - it was the "S <-> H" that confused me. I presume it was to stiffen it up. Think I may drop McCallen's and email next week.

sounds that way alright. cheers thunder....!

so can I adjust the preload a couple of cm's with a c spanner?

The standard adjustment range is around 8-10mm from min to max.

'an inch or so' will raise the ride-heght by about 3 inches, should be fun :D

Always willing to learn. How? Use a C spanner on the single lock ring above the adjuster?

You can only do it when the spring has been removed, the lock ring is pegged.

ah! they've obviously been redesigned since I bought mine. Despite having the remote preload, which I also had the same problem with, they also had twin lock rings below the spring. A much more sensible arrangement.
Mick Gardner Racing sorted the remote preload for me in next to no time and for free:thumb
