Hi Folks,

New at this so here goes....

Put only 3.75 litres into bike, heated it up , checked again, and again after run looked okay.

Took to Knockhill around 120miles total, now bike is clean off the sight glass...

Q. How do I get excess out without getting ;
1- Soaked in Oil?
2- Losing all my new Oil?

Please reply soon as I wanna use my new(to me ) 1200GS

Many Thanks
Steve

doesn't sound like you have overfilled it - you sometimes get funny readings. I would carry on using the bike and check again in a couple of days.

I'll be honest, I'm not at all mechanically minded, so take this as un-expert advice....

....but if you've done an oil change, did you change the filter too?...

....they hold a fair amount of oil, it might be this giving the excess levels?

Too much oil

A neighbour's son came up to me last year. He had borrowed mother's car whilst she was on hoilday, & decided to top up the oil.
He put in 7 litres.
Unfortunately, the car already had 5 litres in it.

He drove down our lane in a cloud of smoke like something out of the movies.
I brought the oil level back to normal with a vacuum deoiler, removed air cleaner, (saturated) & took car for a drive. Inlet manifoldl full of oil. Smoke as bad as ever. It took 5 miles to clear the oil out of the inlet manifold.
Drove life out of car but it was dopey because anti knock sensor had retarded ignition because of pinking.
Stopped engine.
Restarted & car was back to normal.
Myke

As APE said, the sight glass readings seem to vary quite a bit - mine is sometimes above the glass, sometimes 3/4 up the glass....I've stopped worrying. Get some more miles under your belt and it'll fall soon enough! If you drained the previous oil, you won't be far out with 3.75l.
