like a good GS nerd i check my oil window daily.

approaching the 6000 miles service in jan i thought the oil consumption was slowing to almost nothing.

but since i reckon my 1200 uses 100ml every 200 miles.

must be all these cold starts.

Done 850ml in 2000miles and thats a bike that's already done 7.5k when I got it.

when I bought the gs1200 I also bought a new 4ltr drum of oil. now it is just coming up to its 12000 mile service and I have not quite used 2 litres.
However My last bike was a 1150gs and in 2 years and 45,000 miles it continued to use oil at the rate of about 1 litre per 1,000 miles. ( Dealer said that it was O.K. but he would not like to see it any higher)
I know quite a few people with these bikes and oil consumption seems to vary wildly.

One thing that does seem to cut down on oil consumption is do not start it on the side stand. If you do you will often notice a puff of smoke from the exhust, burnt oil!! So making sure the bike is upright when you start it helps keep the oil use down.

I bought 1 litre of Castrol GP after the 600 mile service and I've used 250 ml and done 4000 miles. So it's not using much for a BM and hopefullly it will use less as the miles roll by.
I only use the centre stand in the garage when parked overnight, otherwise I always use the side stand and I usually start it on the side stand. The centre stand is just a pain & less secure than the side stand (unless your name is Tobers and the thing breaks off at a dodgy weld!). There have been many threads on this subject but if your bike is suddenly using more oil I'd keep a close eye on it as something must have changed.

mine has used about the same amount as jaygee,s since the first service (600miles) i have put in 350 mls of oil and its full at the moment and just approaching 4000 miles

and nearly always use the centre stand as for some reason i seam to worry that the side stand isn,t strong enough

i am told berlin says expect up to 1L every 600 mls when running in.

I used no oil at all on run in. I run the bike in over a weekend with all types of roads, but I did it all the way BMW recommend to do.

Used 1 litre between the 1st service and 6000KMS, have ridden the bike aggressively from new!

What oil should i put in my 1200GS

My bike has done 4.7k miles, and used 1litre of oil. 75% of that was due to a severe thrashing around france with 3 other sports bikes.
When talking my a mechanic at Vines in Guildford, they said put thick oil in, as iy suits the engine better, as the fundamental design of the engine is 20yrs old and new full synth oils get burnt far too quickly in a R type engine !
Having owned Honda's for the last 12 years, i thought that due to modern engineering tolerances, that oil burning engines were a thing of the past.

So Q1: is what make, and viscosity? to use

AND

When i thrash it, oil leaks from just above the rubber air intakes on the side of the engine. The air filter box? Does anyone else have such a problem, and if so, how did they cure it ?

I am using Castrol GP in 20w50 grade, i've done 4,500 miles, after the 6,000 mile service i shall use a synthetic 20w50, probably Amsoil. My bike has not used any measurable amount of oil.

Just got through 1.5 litres at 3K miles. I'm not very impressed to be honest. Oil consumption is worse than on my old R100GS. If it keeps burning it at this rate I'll be going through around 7 litres a year!

you must let us know what vines say about that, ian. and by thrash do you mean keeping it above 5500rpm? (or more?)
