oil and filter question

There are hundreds of threads on this subject.

IMHO, don`t worry too much. It`s a tractor engine not a high performance race bike. As long as the oil is done at regular intervals, it`s no problem.

I use Halfords 20/50 for classic cars in my GS`s. It`s £13-99 fo 5 litres, got all the right codes and is good enough according to my local dealer.

frequency of oil change

Guys, i've read the thread and picked up a lot of useful info (just got a filter tool off Ebay) and although I was used to using 10/40 semi synth on my old triumph tiger as a result of this thread I'm probably going to go for the 20/50 on my recently acquired GS.
However my question is how often?? I know the book eludes to 6000miles although if that distance isn't done do they do it on the annual service? I've also read an advert where a guy who did a lot of miles changed his every 3000miles?

I commute 100miles a day - what's the general advice. I got my bike last week with 1000miles on it and it's two years old. I've added 400miles already!!

As someone pointed out, it's not a highly strung engine. I think changing the oil sooner than 6000 miles will just be a waste of money. But many people do it because it makes them feel better, so whatever works for you

No need to change every 3000. Oil is so good now that it works fine for 6000 miles whichever oil you use.

Save your money for the invitable amount of bling you will buy when you log onto Nippy Norman`s website.......

Seeing as I'm about 20 miles from you, and I've got all the right tools, why not bring the bike over here or I'll come to you, but you will need to warm your bike up a bit anyway before you drain the oil off.
