Swopped my GS for an 08 GSA recently. I was told by the Dealer when I enquired about fitting an oil cooler cover that they had been instructed by BMW that they are no longer recommended and not to fit them..!
Has anyone else come across this?

All the Best

When I fitted my Beowulf oil cooler cover to my 05 1200gs, I did wonder if it would restrict the airflow.

But as I don't live in a hot country, I haven't worried about it.

If you stick to colder countries like the UK, I doubt it would be a problem.

Just MY opinion though

I have a Wunderlich cover on my 08 1200GS, and was told by the dealer approx 3-4 weeks ago that they had got word from BMW to advise against fitting. Said it was due to an "engine failure" being traced back to air flow being obstructed, so increasing the temp. Looking at the size of the mesh on my cover, and potential restriction, I find it hard to believe, but the dealer said in case of any engine problems BMW may not honour any warranty if one is fitted!

I guess you pay your money and take your choice.

For the ones that are a sheet of metal with holes in it I can see where BMW is coming from. I have experience with a beowulf one on a water radiator on my TDM. Its actually a known cure for the normally cool running engine and brings the temp up 5-10 C. I actually take it off in the summer and put it back on in the winter. As for the mesh ones I cant see it making much odds as they are far more open. I guess instead of listing approved ones BMW just decided to not approve any.
Out of curiosity does anybody know of any oil coolers that have been damaged by flying debris? It looks pretty well protected to me specially giving most will be going upwards from a tyre in front of you and the beak with stop that.

Nope. BUT, they do get stuffed full of dead flies in the summer (restricting airflow). That's why I've fitted the cover.

I can confirm that a flying Skoda Fabia can damage your oil cooler!! An elderly gentleman of 82 years, who incidently failed his eyesight test at the scene, pulled out in front of me. After weighing up the best course of action I decided to hit him straight on into his front wing rather than risk swerving in front for a guaranteed broadside, anyway unbelievably there was little damage to the PANZER (R1200GSA) but the beak flexed in and damaged the fins of the oil cooler. I took the PANZER straight round to James sherlock to check out and surprisingly the forks were fine although some other minor damage including the oil cooler. To that end I thought I'd treat myself to the Touratech protector, that's my reasoning but now thinking about my reasoning I'd be lucky to get away so lightly next time!!!

Well that went off on a bit of a tangent, this happens occasionally when your bored out of your head. Anyway back to the original question 'does anybody know of any oil coolers that have been damaged by flying debris', NO I haven't!

I have two huge dents in mine :blast.

I have a couple of mates I regularly hoon with and we tend to play on smaller B roads, but there's often a bit more gravel on them.

I wish I'd put on a cover from the start (new bike), one of the dents is right on the main artery of the cooler and is deep! I'm sure it'll be fine, but it's still a niggle in the back of my mind, esp if its very hot.
