I have seen a short 'U' pipe in one of the catalogues (Touratech, I think). It allows the oil cooler to be removed, without changing the filter cover.

Alternatively, replace the filter cover with one from an R80 as those don't have the oil cooler outlets.

The 100 does run hotter than the 80, so if you are going somewhere warm, or are likely to be stuck in traffic I would replace the leaking oil cooler with a good one.

.

You can't do this without doing other mods.

The covers are different, and the internal spigot inside the filter housing is longer in a cooler fitted bike

Aah - I never did a direct comparison between my 80RT and 100GS and thought that only the covers were different.

I know that the oil filters are different - but what else is different between the 80 and 100 ?

I'm curious now.

Apologies for the bum steer.

would a filter cover from a r100/7 fit don't no the age of the bike

hi does any one no if the touratech Oil cooler bypass hose for a BMW R 100 GS
shown on the web site could be used to remove the oil cooler
Sean

When my radiator burst on my R100GS..that splendid fellow, Judge, kindly sent me his touratech bye-pass hose:).

It is very simple to fit and does what it says on the tin...replaces the oil cooler, so I removed mine with no problems whatsoever :thumb2

I wouldnt dismiss out of hand the possibility that BMW did actually know what they were doing when they made the bike.

The R100 GS has a shallow sump and a oil cooler - Anton Larbigers site has all the details on sump sizes.

If you were too remove the oil cooler for whatever reason it would seem prudent to fit the larger sump as fitted to the 1000cc bikes which did not have a cooler.

I have a temp gauge fitted and with a cooler and the oil gets round to 120 c pretty quick , and then stays there.

You wouldn't want the oil much hotter unless you are running a decent synthetic, so proceed with care,

AFAIK the 98 R100GS didn't have an oil cooler and the shallow sump as original

Common mod that's on mine is to fit the bigger sump, and I'll be getting one of those oil temp gauges that replaces the filler plug. Just to keep me happy and for something else to look at :)

I was talking to the fellow from Scriminger Engine Developments at a BMF Rally a year or so ago and he was telling me that he has had 1,000 cc airhead motors up to 160 degrees C under load .

As far as I recall from my school days - that's the boiling point of oil :blast

I would keep the oil cooler :thumb
