the 1150 GS does have a thermostat for the oil cooler doesn't it?

'cos if it does, mine's not opening  i'm getting 6 bars on the RID during normal riding (seen 7 briefly on the motorway) yet the oil cooler is stone cold.
right hand pipe is warm, left pipe is cold.

where is the thermostat? and has anyone heard of this problem before?

Cookie,

not aware of a thermostat. Looking at the parts diagram...

...and list...

...I can see no mention of it. Looked at the engine diagram & list as well - no mention of it...

Mike:confused:

Parts Fiche Link

Edit - looking at the flow diagram - the oil enters on the right and exits on the left. When you say cold - do you just mean cooler - is the radiator doing its job and cooling the oil?? What was the outside air temperature? My bike goes up to 6 bars regularly in hot weather, although 7 is more unusual (slow speed off road etc). Do you have any form of oil cooler guard?

it's mentioned here and more detailed reference here.

i just followed up that last link to the manual & found this diagram.
so now i know where it is i will probably need to check it out.

before i go too far with this, can anyone with an 1150 confirm that their oil cooler actually gets warm to the touch at normal operating temp. ditto inlet & outlet pipes (cooler end)?

my rad is totally cold to the touch when RID is at 6 bars. maybe stat doesn't kick in until it's hotter? i don't know

it's fairly warm here at the mo. low 20's but seems hotter.

RID generally rises slowly to 6 during normal riding but hit 7 while cruising on the motorway once, then it went back to 6. i didn't slow down AFAIR perhaps that was the stat operating.

i did have a rad cover on but removed it to see if it made any difference to temps. that's when i noticed cold radiator.

stat can be seen here in situ. if it does not operate cooler is bypassed.

no support plate just a removeable steel pin stuck in the top.

spring underneath jams flat top of control element up against bottom of pipe flange, hence no flow.

i can't see how it would ever open, though to be honest, i can't see how the one in the diagram works either

edit: this is what i think. when the control element gets hot the pin is pushed out pressing the whole thing down allowing oil to flow.

trouble is there is nothing for the pin to bear against. i think there's a bit missing.

the support plate. i need someone who knows.

why does this sort of thing always come to light on a feckin' sunday

If it wasn't opening how would your RH pipe be warm?

My bikes been parked up for 20 mins. Both pipes are 'mildly' warm (could be heat off engine) and the back of the cooler is a lot warmer (got to be from hot oil in there).
BTW I have a TT guard and bike was running with 5 bars on display (most I've ever seen).

Good luck.........

seal of stat element against pipe is not perfect. a small ammount is bound to leak past.

with hot engine, my cooler is still stone cold therefore i infer there is no hot oil in it in any quantity.

'course i could just lob the stat element & run without like an 1100.

- So take it out and report the results. ?

Be the first - go on ?

i'm toying with that idea, but i might be better off waiting until i've talked with a bmw parts man. naturally CW motorcycles is feckin' well closed on a monday

sherlocks, the best bmw parts shop i've used by miles, are sending me the missing part which hopefully will sort the problem out.

new s/h stat & support plate fitted.

5 bars on the RID & a toasty warm oil cooler. job done.
