Stupid, annoying little thing I know - but how do you stop the oil filler for the engine from leaking please? It is one of those with a logo on it, no idea which one, needs a key to open it, or an allen key, or similar.

I hope I don't have to buy a new one...but the oil is squirting out at quite a rate. Did 300 odd miles today and lost the sight glass full.

Any simple fixes gratefully received (and yes, the little tab is located in the little groove).

I had the same issue cured it with a new rubber ring seal from Halfords.

they're a complete waste of time and money imho - I have never heard of someones oil being 'vandalised' i have heard plenty about problems with so called 'secure' oil filler caps... none of which actually are! £2 for an original :thumb2

The rubber ring seal is exactly the same on all filler caps (original or aftermarket) and replacing it with a new one usually does the trick.

Cheers,
Patrick

Thank you sirs....I will make a trip to Halfords and ask them for a new ringpiece then!

I have the same problem (the leaking oil - not the need for a new ring piece :augie ) but we don't have Halfords in HK and I don't want to divert to BMW HK (it's a bit out of my way)!

A short-term fix is to take off the rubber ring and turn it over before replacing! Yes, it worked for me!

Now that I have typed that I suppose I should ride to BMW and get a new ring - it's not that far.

There are two o-rings involved.
One seals the plug to it's seat, and the other seals the seat (black placcy) to the allow rocker-cover. Used to get these as part of an oil-change kit afair.

The second one above is probably the cause of some of your trouble. It should be changed once a year or so. You get at it by carefully prying the seat out of the rocker cover using a screwdriver through the bore. It is not held or fixed except by the o-ring fit in the bore.

In an emergency (in Normandy on holidays, and sick of a dirty leg / boot) it was possible to run a few turns of dental floss around the black plakky thing under the o-ring to give it a bit more bite on the rocker cover.

Similar to Bin, I've used a few turns of PTFE tape (twist it up to make PTFE string) to effect a temporary repair on a Suzuki (well it was supposed to be temporary, it stayed on for 6000miles  ). Always keep a roll in my toolkit.

Take it out, clean the seating thoroughly, clean the o-ring thoroughly, re-install.

I'll go along with that. I had the problem, did as above, made sure no oil present on seal or filler hole, no problem from there on.

I believe it is called a "capillary reaction"! Works the same way as with two sheets of glass placed together (face to face side by side) and stood side on in water. The water travels up between the two pieces of glass, like on a greenhouse. Hope this helps.

Had it out and cleaned both aperture and plastic seal/plug holder before I posted on here for help.

I think it is probably worn as the groove is not that deep anymore. A new ringpiece will do me good anyway!:guitarist
