Hi all,
Just back from a 2500kms trip around the Victorian Alps which I can honestly say has the best motorbike roads I have ever ridden (insanely twisty, generally good surfaces, lots of variety, good weather, no cops or speed cameras and the clincher - hardly any other traffic).

But now the bad news...
Oil is 'weeping' from the right hand side of my bike around the join between the engine and gearbox/clutch (no pic - sorry).
I seem to remember another thread on here where someone documented a similar problem and speculated that it was likely to be a faulty seal on the input drive to the gearbox/clutch.

The bike still runs OK but is seems to be using more oil than usual and sometimes gives off an evil smell (burning oil I suspect).
All up the bike has done nearly 25k Kms and is still under warranty
I phoned my dealer and they cannot look at the bike until 7 March. They say that if it is what i suspect they will probably have to substantially strip the bike to investigate (sob)

Can anyone enlighten me on the outcome of the aforementioned problem or shed any other light on this.
Thanks

Yes - it's not an uncommon problem - dealer should fix it under warranty - happened to my bike after 6,000 miles - if left too long then the oil may contaminate the clutch and then that will have to be replaced also.

The bike has to be split in two to get at the gearbox input seal - sounds horrendous but they are designed to come apart like this.

There have been a couple of threads on here about it along with pics - but at the moment don't have the links - try searching for oil leak in the 1200GS section - you will find it.

When my bike had the same problem, the dealer said it was an output shaft from the gearbox with the leak going forward and appearing at the join. Whatever, it was painless to deal with - into the dealer and out again a day later. Hopefully cured, but in mid winter I havent done enough miles to know.

I too have noticed "burning rubber" type smells, but nothing has happened as a result so I am resolutely ignoring them.

Maybe its a generational thing, but I dont expect car or bike to be 100% reliable, so it doesnt bother me when they arent.
