:blastI recently bought a '04 1200gs i now notice damp oil mark around the plactic insert on the final drive i take it the oil seal is leaking slighty is the possible for a fairly compedent amature mechanic to take on.
Being a tight wad (i was going to put ass but i didn't think i should)i'm not keen on paying a garage to do it if i can manage it

I`ve got a `54 plate 12GS & also have the slightly damp bit around the same area as you :augie I was told not to worry about it as the internal pressure when the bike`s flying along as about 1 bar ish so pushes a bit of oil past the seal. I was told this by a service manager of a well thought of main dealer :D
I`m just keeping an eye on it and if it starts pishing out I`ll then do something about it :thumb2

Thanks Big Lee that takes a load off,its not dripping or anything like that just damp.i'll keep a eye on it and wait till it starts to drip

I've got a similar problem on my 1150 gsa.

It doesn't look like an "excessive" oil leak, as in there isn't enough coming out to warrant a drip.

Have checked gearbox and final drive oil levels and both are fine, and thats over about 1000 miles of this "problem".

So far nothings started rumbling or gone bang...

Gents, oil seals are ment to keep the oil IN, they should NOT leak.
1200 seal and cover can be replaced, diddy screwdriver to lift out the black plastic cap, self tapper to remove the old seal. Big socket to replace the seal
and tap a new plastic cap in. Job done. BUT keep an eye on it....
