Hi all
my first slight concern since owning the bike!

Not bad then......

I took my bike for MOT ( flew through)

but when I got back I noticed a slight oil leak from the rear drive shaft boot/ gaiter. a small dribble had run out of the lower rear gaiter passed the zip tie)

I checked the gaiter ( fine- but the silly plastic zip ties were not)

The rear zip tie was 'loose' and with no way of tightening it up scrap)

I replaced the zip ties ( both front and rear of the gaiter) with stainless steel car CV boot ties which look a much better job

No leaks now

My concern after all this was
Should there even be oil inside this area?

if so where is it leaking from?

rear diff is perfect
gearbox level is OK so no appent leaks

mmmmmm or should I not worry?

Cheers:beerjug:

JUST A DROP

Its just a drop ( phew):)

I will watch the oil levels in the Gearbox and final drive though

Cheers

I have a leak in that area... seems to be a fairly common occurence on the 1100 (anyway)... a track of oil from the gater.. down the angle to the base/backend of the torque bar.

I dont worry about it.

Apart from looking a little messy... its not a problem. washes off when I (occasionally) give the bike a wash... and takes sometimes 'weeks' to reappear.

First time it happened.. I had a peep at the drive oil... and it was at the level it should be - on the flat - up to the base of the thread.

Came to the conclusion that - yes there is a leak... but it looks a lot worse than it is.. Its intermittent. not enough comes out to drip and mark the floor... so why worry.

A little oil gets out... but i know that nothing is getting in - when i change the oil it looks exactly the same coming out - as the new oil going in.

Got the same problem on my 1150R last summer, it was the pinion seal that leaked from the final drive... Because the guy at BMW had pressed in about 50% more oil than supposed... Guess who's not serving my bike again!!

Anyway, if this is your problem, it takes a lot of special tools and fasteners to repair this, and in Sweden it costed me about 200€ getting it fixed, absolutely worth the price! I believe they changed other seals when the final drive and drive shaft was down for that price!

update

Just a quick update, when I removed the gaiter plastic clips a dollop of oily water came out:blast:eek

Guess who forgot and used the pressure washer to clean his bike.
The oil was a very small ammount now all washed away with good old WD40.
Dried and two nice stainless steel car CV boot ties used instead of the cheap plastic ones.:)

Then a 40mile test ride and on return I popped the front boot seal back ( I deliberately hadn't tightened the stainless band up completely before the test ride.

Clean as a whistle now.:thumb

So final band tightening

Job done:clap

No need to panic.:augie

The stainless bands tighten up far more than the plastic cable ties so should also stop the entry of WATER!:thumb

Cheers all:thumb

You mean ............................. you get rain in the Midlands?:augie

These S/S bands, are they reusable?

They're just long thin stainless jubilee clips made by BMW - The 1100 had stainless ties. I've stainless on my 1150 gaitor :P

You can use one from the 1100, and the other from the 1100 isn't long enough, but one from an airhead paralever fits the 1150 :thumb

No they are not by BMW ( to expensive)

50p each at my local car spares shop

Not reusable ( same as plastic zip ties in that respect)

But a far better looking job

I will post a picture here later today ( When I've taken it!)

I last washed my 1100 almost 3 weeks ago... and have used it daily since - just been out to check and there's no sign of a leak... It's still there though. I've done nothing whatsoever to cure it.

This leak thing is just another quirk - in what must be one of the quikiest bikes bmw have ever made.

Picture as promised

Stainless 'Zip' ties in place
a much better looking job
