Hi All,

I have just done my very first oil change on my 1150 GSA.

I replaced the pretty grubby oil with nice clean Fuchs synthetic and can now see it in the glass!

My question is regarding to the level it should be at.

I filled it with the recommended level and pre filled the filter before fitting it.

When cold and standing the oil in the glass is just shy of the very top (just inside the red circle). When running and warmed up its empty.

Is this right?

When cooled it goes back to as before.

My caution is i am about to do a 2 day trip and want to make sure its A ok before i do so.

Cheers for any advice.

Other than the unnecessary use of synthetic oil, all seems normal..

To get a correct reading leave the bike on the side stand for ten minutes or so, then put it on the main stand on a level bit of ground. You must do the side stand bit to get all the oil into the sump otherwise you will get a low reading.
The reading may differ marginally depending on how the bike is loaded up i.e. if it is sitting with the back of front tyre touching the ground but as long as you have it between the middle and top of the red ring it is fine.

Sounds about right to me. Anywhere in the red circle should be ok. I put bike on side stand after a run to allow oil to drain back down from oil cooler for 10 min's then put on main stand to check level.

When running I only expect to see a little oil sliding down the side glass.

Never ever faffed about getting a stopwatch out and timing the time the bike is on the side stand to get the oil level

Sidestand down, off the bike, onto the centre stand, refill the petrol tank, check the oil level. Easy peasy :thumb2

As a guide, by the time you've put the bike on the centre stand, turned it off, taken your jacket gloves and helmet off, hugged the wife and kids, told the wife and kids how you enjoyed the run and put the kettle on ... about 10 minutes has gone. :thumb2

What I was told was:
Always check tyre pressures when the bike is cold
Always check oil levels when the bike is warm.
