Oil level window leaking, 2 questions.

I discovered just the other day that my sight glass is leaking (2010 1200GS). Signs were a lot of black goo on the usually clean silver engine case and a puddle of oil on the recess on the outside of the sight glass. I'm gonna let the dealer fix it as although it is a quick job with the right tools, if they bugger it up then it's their problem and it'll also be covered by warranty should it go again. Unfortunately he hasn't got one in stock so has ordered one, my questions are:

1) Can I still use the bike? (obviously I shall watch the level like a hawk)

2) Is this common as my last 1200 (owned for 5 years from new) never suffered this problem (lots of others though)? I see that it's suggested that leaving it on the side stand whilst running is the likely cause but I have NEVER done this.

Thanks for the offer. I'll check with him tomorrow. He's usually pretty good at getting parts in but you know how it is sometimes.
