Oil level

Quick Q,

The oil level on my R1200gs is a bit inconsistent.

Its supposedly 1 litre from the top of the sight glass to the bottom

Thais fine, and they do burn some oil, so keep an eye on the level

Duly noted.

Now its been going down as i expected, with it reaching the 3/4 full mark over the last couple if weeks

Now occasionally on start up, the oil level symbol flashes up for a few seconds or less and then goes out.

I've checked the level. (5 mins after stopping the engine / on level ground)

Now here's the odd part, the level has gone back up to the top of the

sight glass ??


Started the bike tonight, and it sounded like a hydraulic tensioner was empty , a really loud clattering , but after about 5 - 10 seconds silence.


I checked the oil level when i got home and its just of the top of the sight glass

Should i be concerned, or is this just another gs foible

Its just another foible.. As long as its in the upper half of the glass its fine

Is that oil or Alcohol?

It's a foible caused by oil draining out of the oil cooler.

Funny foibles from the level sensor are likely to be the connection block.

The RHS cam chain tensioner will often clack until oil pressure tightens it up.

Mine now has 66K miles and hardly uses a drop between changes. But slightly overfill and it will quickly burn off the excess. Who knows how it knows.

Have you left it on the side stand prior to starting it up? Hard work but always try to keep mine on the centre stand if not sit on it upright for a min before you start up. Stops the clatter and the oil light flashing and I would suspect undue wear on the righthand pot

Could be a plan but mine has always clattered on the right regardless of which stand I've used. Though oil light is always well behaved.
I might prop it up leaning to the right and see if the rattle swaps sides.
