When I came to give the GS her weekly wash and rub down, I noticed that the oil sight window was misted on the outside with oil. It doesn’t seem to be too much…. Should I be worried?

It's called seepage. You sight glass is on it's way out (literally). Replacement is really easy, it's just the cost of the sight class that gets you.

Repalcement: Either drill the clear plastic, or break it. If you drill it, use a screw in the hole, and pull out the assembly. If you break the clear plastic, leaver out the whole assembly with a large screwdriver. Clean the surfaces on the engine. Lightly coat the new sight glass with oil, and tap it in with a large socket, or a short section of PVC pipe (either need to be the size of the sight glass).

Oh, this easiest done when doing an oil change.

It was supposed to be an easy job but I had problems when I did mine....

Couldnt shift it from mine without the use of a heavy duty draw hammer screwed through the rear perforated metal plate.

I was also advised by a **w technician when replacing it NOT to use oil as previous thread suggests but a lick of spit. Supposedly the oil makes it more likely to come out again?

Follow the shop manual:

Replacing oil level sight glass
• Pierce the plastic disc with a large screwdriver
and lever out the oil level sight glass.
Coat the sealing face of the new oil level sight
glass with engine oil and drive it in with drift,
BMWNo. 00 5 550.

If you don't coat it, you might tear the rubber.
