Hi i have noticed oil has been dripping on the back wheel of my 06 1200gs. I am thinking the worst......fd failure. I am in Annecy having done 1900 miles through europe to Croatia and on my way home to blighty 2 up fully laiden. Any suggestions (sensible preferably) would be gratefully received.

If it's the bearing taking out the seal then a BMW dealer can fix it in an hr or so.
Grand Prix Motos in Annecy is the nearest BMW dealer.

Thanks guys (especially Rushy - great info) have break down insurance so I will call them and try to get it fixed in Annecy tomorrow

As Rushy says, it's most likely the input seal.

If there's no obvious wheel play though don't worry too much as it should not get any worse so if you can't sort a repair now no prob waiting until you get home, I ran my GS for quite a few miles before getting it sorted when my input seal failed.

The fact it's an '06 bike would suggest you've a fair few miles on the bike? so you may want to consider having the FD re-built at the same time for complete peace of mind. Mikeyboy on here does them for a very reasonable cost.

Your in France.
Bear in mind some places are closed on Mondays.
Good luck.

Get the seal fixed then when home send the whole FD to Mikeyboy. He will make sure everything is good inside for very reasonable cost. Seals don't fail for no reason.
Hermes can do the delivery.

This happened to me a long way from home as well. i had only bought the bike and it was the first long run i had taken it. It turned out that some muppet had overfilled the final drive and due to the pressure build up oil leaked from input shaft and landed on the back wheel. when i arrived home i replaced oil with 190ml and have had no problems since. How many miles are on your bike? Also a pic would help as well.

If it's just misting from the outer seal don't worry and just ride home. We've had this a lot when it's very hot in the US.
