Hello there Lads
Long time since I had issues with the bike, but I know here is the place to be if I do.
I was wondering if this was something to worry about, Yesterday I noticed Oil on the bash plate and around the area of the side stand, Might it be from me over filling the oil by mistake or from me speedin away from the lights when the engine was not really warmed up enough yet or do I just need to tighten that big nut there in the foto?
It's not gushin out or any thing like that, but it's usually in the engine and not there on the bashplate, the oil that is and not the nut :)

Thanks for any info you might have.

I say it's the pressure switch that leaks ;)

Like suggested, take off the plate and wash the bike. Ride for 5 mins and see where it leaks from ;)

I had the same thing on my 1100 GS ;)

If it was mine I would clean it up and try to locate the offending leak.
But, what is the oil level saying?

I usually clean it once every two years needed or not, but yeah that i'll do that this weekend, well that's the plan to clean it and see if it has stopped leaking. I use it every day for getting to work all year round , except when the ice was a bit risky for a week in the winter.

The oil level looks fine, but i'm keeping an eye on it.

That big nut secures the return from the oil cooler so it would be a good idea to see if it is correctly torqued. 35Nm

I'll give it a bang with a clean rag ,and check to see if it is still leaking or has fixed itself :augie

Two months ago I had it serviced , before that I used to use mineral oil but since the service I now use semi syntetic oil BMW recommends it sae 20w-50 I wonder if that had anything to do with it, I doubt it though.

Ah thats great, me mate just got himself a big new torque wrench, I can check that.
Thanks.

The oil is on the fins in the area around that big nut and on the nut itself, but it's clean just above the nut , so it looks like it's not coming from above but from the nut itself,
I'll check out the torque on Sunday and clean it up in the mean time.

Packer is spot on there Dude. :nod

I had the same on my 1150. Loosen the nut and replace the crush washers either side of the pipe, re-torque the nut and all should be well again. :thumb2

Just before you go mad!!

Get two off the alloy sealing washers

UNDO the big nut and drop the washers out

"Sometimes they get a spec of salt on them and that corrodes thru and the seal is compromised

So don't just get a torque wrench! take them out and check that they haven;t corroded thru and are leaking at the corrosion IF you just tighten them they will leak more

;)

Thanks man
The salt thing could be it bike is covered in salt from the winter,
I'll let ye all know how I get on after the weekend

Silly question :)
When I loosen that nut a load of oil will come out of the hole I suppose, Can I put the bike on it's side while I change the washers to prevent the oil spilling out, or do I have to first drain the oil properly?

Similar thing happened to me. It was just after I'd serviced it so I thought I'd not tightened up something correctly.

It turns out my GS has a habit of keeping the oil filter oil seal all to itself. I never noticed the lack of oil seal on the old filter. I just popped in the new filter(inc seal) so there were now two oil seals. Some oil leaked out after a ride.

Check this hasn't happened to you.

Thanks man, I'll check that out, didn't get a chance to look at the bike this weekend, went on a work trip to go Drinking in Scotland, it was great will have to do that again.:)

I took a look, cleaned it up and just to test how thight it was I put the torc wrench on to see what happens and I was able to easily turn the nut about 1.5cm before the wrench went click, it was loose as hell, I'll let ye know if that fixed it and at the next service i'll ask them to change the washers :)
