Took the oil pump out to check it over and measure the clearances, change the seal etc.

The oil pump gear on my 80 is driven by 2 flats on the end of the cam but the fit to the drive is supprisingly sloppy, I would have thought it would be reasonably snug.

Are they normally like this ?

I'm going to fit a new pump anyway as the rotor tip clearance is above top limit so a new gear could reduce the movement.

Just pulled a cam and oil pump out of my stash and measured them. 11.98mm across the flats of the cam. 12.01mm across the flats of the oil pump. I've swapped cams by just removing timing cover, if they were exact you'd never line the oil pump up again.

Just out of interest and for future reference is there a degree figure stamped into the nose of the cam? I'm curious as to wether you have a 308 or 336 cam.

Measurements are very similar to your's.

In the pic you can see the wear.

Can't see the nose of the cam as the sprocket is still fitted.

If it's got a degree stamped on it you can see it with the sprocket in place. If there's nothing showing it will more than likely be a 308.

Nothing to be seen as far as I can tell

Any recommendations for a silicon seller for the oil pump cover

Don't know anybody who flogs silicone :nenau
I just fit a new O ring when I've been in there and threadlock the cover screws. Never had a problem yet.

As you said fitted it without any sealer, just a new o-ring and a little loctite on the threads.

New oil pump clearances measured up far better than the old one as you'd expect and there's significantly less play in the centre gear.

Fitted the replacement flywheel back in exactly the same orientation as the old one, fitted the clutch only to find the original flywheel couldn't have been fitted correctly.

Ah well start again.:(
