Hi All,

Need some advise pls. I'm based in the UAE and the BMW garage is not really up to speed with what oils to use on bikes etc.

I've recently bought a R1200GS and have started to do the oil changes (every 3000km) myself. According to the GS handbook the best oil for high tempratures (40 degrees plus) is SAE 15W-40. I've managed to get BMW High Power Oil SAE 15W-40, but the instructions on the oil says Multigrade HD engine oil for gasoline and diesel engines . The guys at BMW told me it should be OK, but I don't realy trust them. Since I've used this oil there seems to be a rattling sound from my valves. Can anyone explain this?

Are there any other grade oils that will be ok in high tempratures or is this 15w-40 ok? :nenau

Thanks

I think you'll find that BMW reccomend 20/50 for the sort of temps typical in Southern Europe/UK, let alone where you are.

Castrol make a mineral 20/50 called GP and semi-synth called GPS.

FWIW I use GP and this is also reccomended by my local MWB dealer.

A thinner oil such as the one you are using will make the engine more noisey as you have noticed and, when it gets very hot, the cam chain tensioner will loose pressure and become very noisey too.

Run a search on 'oil', grab a four pack of ice cold beer, sit back and read and read and read.................................

I would go with the 20w-50 or a 15w-50 if you can't get hold of the 20w.
The 15w-40 would only take you up to about 30 degrees

For what it's worth I can't find Castrol GPS 20/50 anywhere. Where do you get yours?

Didn't think they made a GPS in 20w-50, but as far a I remember they make a 15w-50 GPS

Mmmmm...you may well be right :nenau as I use GP I wouldn't swear to it but I'm sure back in my CCM days we used 20/50 GPS............memory's not so good at my age! ;)

Thanks again

I went out and bought Mobil Super XHP 20W-50 Mineral Oil last night as I could not find any Castrol products in any of the shops. Mainly because I’m based in Abu Dhabi and the mostly sell the oil locally produced. Will give the guys in Dubai a call and see if I can get hold of Castrol. In the meantime, do you think the Mobil oil will do the job?

And a fully synth called R4 Superbike in 15w50 viscosity. Try Opie Oils.
