oil rip off

Is it me or is bmw ripping everyone off with 10/50 i've rang three different dealers and they all say put different oil in what the fecks going on if I put in 10/40 will this invalidate the waranty this is supposed to be a bike that goes round the world you try buying 10/50 in the feckin outback I cant even get it in london,another reason to look at the multistrada next time

jus put what you want in, as long as its the same colour as theirs it dont matter,
20/50,,,10/40,,,,10/50,
all ok in this countrys climate

1. Some punctuation would be good. We can't really read what the feck you're on about.
2. Why on earth are you phoning BMW dealers for oil prices?
3. Have you read the manual to find out the correct oil spec. for your bike?
4. Are you actually in the outback? If so, you may have a problem with things other than oil.....
5. Please buy a Multistrada. Now. And in three years time, after it's been 'round the world', tell us how much it's worth.

Have a wee read of this thread. I think this covers most things, from an apparent expert. ...

The dealer wont know what you put in it and if something broke, I doubt very much that they would go to the expense to analyse what the oil is in your engine .

From my experience even if they did go to the expense of analyzing the oil, it is a very hit and miss affair as any oil that meets the ACEA or API spec (not viscosity) will be very difficult to tell apart from another.

To get down to analyzing the various additive packs that make an oil is very expensive so probably not viable if they are only looking for reasons to reject a claim.

N.B. I am talking motor oils here, it is relatively easy to identity other types of oils (cooking, cutting, baby, transmission etc etc)

Well I'll be topping up with the 20/50 which is what I've on the shelf in the garage. As long as its in spec with your instruction manual and ambient temperatures, its not a problem. Mixing oils is not a problem.

.............we really do need an oil sub-forum!!

So what the feck does "ripping off" mean? A rip-off (in all the bits of Britain I've been to) means highly or unreasonably priced.

I believe the OP is referring to the cost of 10/50 fully synthetic at BMW dealers- around £15 a litre.

I do think that BMW keep moving the goal posts as far as oil for the 1200 is concerned

I have never allowed myself to be ripped off, if I dont like something I will go elsewhere, there is always someone else that wants my custom.

Went to my dealership and asked the oil thread problem and asked why i should want to put high spec full synthetic oil in at my next service,as it is desighned for high revving large modern sports bikes ?? why cant i use the standard oil it recommends in the service book ,i was informed its my choice what oil i use ,so i wont be paying £60 for my oil at my next service

When i top mine up, I just use what BIKE oil I've got in the shed. Usually, 10w40 semi.
