Hi Folks, I have just bought a new 1200 GS, and there is a smell of hot oil when running in slow traffic. It is using some oil ( its a third of the way down the oil window after 330 miles). Is this smell normal, and how much oil do boxer engines use ?.

A litre or less every 5,000 miles is okay when they're new.

Oil window, top to bottom is about 0.25 litres.

Smell is normal in slow traffic.

:)

thanks for that. glad to know i havent got a problem.:)

I noticed it when I did a test ride on the dealer's 2010 demo bike. Mine did the same at first. Now with 4.4K on the clock it no longer smells of oil.

Why does the manual quote " max 0.5 l (Difference
between MIN and MAX) " then????

Slip the clutch a bit, especially when hot and the 1200 stinks; I wouldn't describe as an oil smell, more like rancid fish .....................
