06 1200 GS, 37000 miles. One breakdown that cost me an hour of my holiday.
I`ll settle for that!:thumb2

That might be due to you abusing the bike and throwing it up and down rocky, muddy trails.

Sounds like a good enough excuse for not cleaning it :thumb2

My last bike was a varedero. . . never broke down and really comfortable. My o6 GSA has broken down twice and gives me a numb behind. . . . . . but guess what . . . .I love it

1200gsa

Just back from a jaunt around France,(1900 miles) no problems------just a pulsating front brake, bike is booked in for new discs at 7000 miles.....

Had my GSA for nearly 2 years recently did 4000miles in 2 weeks around France and Spain fully loaded + me and the wife. No problems. What more could you ask for out of life!

I like the looks and presence of the 1200GSA, I dislike the 1200GS though.

I would buy one but only as long as I had another bike in the garage, to use whilst the 1200 was on the ramp at the repairers.

If you want one go and buy one. Most 12gses are fairly reliable. I've done 24000 miles with no major problems.

Got an 07 1200 & seriously thinking of selling it & going back to Hondas.

I've done around 20 trips around Europe 17 trouble free on VFR's 3 on GS's.
The 1150 developed an oil leak from the rear gear box seal whilst in Italy Ok yes it got me home no problems the next trip we came off in the snow so can't blame it for that
The third trip last week this time on my 07 1200 with 9000 miles at the time. I was bikeless for 2 days while having the antenna ring replaced.

I've now lost confidence in it I quite expext the fuel pump relay to be next.

I do enjoy the riding position and don't really want to go back to the vfr type riding position so a bit undecided but what I will say is breaking down was never in my mind when on Hondas wish I could say that since BMW ownership.

to me the moral seems to be with BMWs that its a lottery when buying a new bike/model...

when the 1100 came out in 94 - the biggest fault was a leaky seal that trashed the clutch on 'some' bikes... then there were gearbox troubles that beset 'some' bikes - that wasn't finally sorted once and for all until 96/97. I don't think BMW ever admitted there was a problem...

I'm not aware of any massive problems with the 1150 varients.... but then I never liked the 'look' of that particular bike. (so haven't paid attention)

So now we're up to the 1200 and back to square one.. with 'some' bikes having problems... My only crticism of the new bike is that it has too many 'solutions' to problems that never actually existed - which make it over complicated...

but then that was the main criticism of the 1100 way back in 94 - TOO COMPLICATED.

The 1100 only had one recall in its lifespan.... how many has the 1200 had now?

funny thing 'life' innit.

Everyday riders don't break down

I've been around the fringes of this forum for a while, and it seems that

a) If it does break down it gets fixed under warranty
b) People who ride regularly seem to break down less

Mine has had some failures (in 30k miles) but they have been fixed with no quibbling and it has never let me down on the road.

If I was buying another bike I would definitely look around, but to be honest I haven't seen any other bike that does it like a GS, and I don't want to go back to an uncomfortable riding position.

What do you want out of a bike? If the GS ticks the boxes chances are nothing else will.

PS, I renew the BMW Warranty every year, just to be on the safe side. :augie

....if you dont clean it, everytime you use it - you will invalidate your warranty. :ronno:ronno

...Fresh from BMW Customer Service This Week (Thanks Jonny!!!)

Dont splash out 11K as there is plenty of other options out there for much less dosh.

Customer Service is getting ditched as the bill for warranty costs escalate.

.....Fech they get the paint to stay on.

Unbelievable that they would say that! Mine gets washed once a month whether it needs it or not and my dealer has never said a thing!

Perhaps customer service need training in the real world!

i am a bit loyal to the 1150 as the 12 seemed to have less build quality ,
a few people have had 3 or 4 gs 1200,s if they are that good why buy a new one so soon they have only been out a couple of years and have had slight changes.
my 1150 is an 02 and until very recently has had no problems at all ,the dreded throttle control unit thing that goes wrong on the 1200s got me .

but i have a very happy 1150 rider get a one for your self is my advise,
you should always try and get what you want in life,or you could be saying what if? a lot £11000.is a lot of money

Are you really suggesting people would replace an unreliable bike with another unreliable bike, 3 or 4 times?:nenau

Perhaps some people actually ride them so feel the need to change them regularly.:augie

Some cheap bargains out there - 1200GS, with lots of warranty to run.

Dont let the naysayers put you off :beerjug:
