Ok so last night I pull into the petrol station and some how (because I'm a moron) put diesel into my bike and didn't notice.... Then rode it home about 8 miles, started feeling like a fuel starvation/ plugs going problem but managed to get her home then realised what I had done this morning (enter obligatory swearing at myself) tried to start her and it started but died spewing smoke from the exhaust..... FUCK MY LIFE..... know it's a bout a 50/50 mix of unleaded and diesel because I put a £10 of unleaded in the day before and then a £10 of fucking Diesel in last night....

How fucked am I?!

If I drain the tank an re fuel with unleaded and start it a few more times carefully will the diesel burn off?

Any more suggestions? Apart from don't be a fucking muppet in the future?

Cheers

I think you'll be fine with the tank drained and fresh petrol in there. Probably take a few minutes to get the last residue flushed through the injectors etc and may have killed the cat (which would be an issue for MoT purposes in a car, less of an issue for a bike).

I had a similar issue with my boat in France i put 150 litres diesel in to the fuel tank on top of 100 litres of petrol i already had in there cost me over 300 Euros to pump out plus the cost of fuel and the cost to refill with petrol that was our holiday spending money spent in one foul swoop we had to come home after that.

Once home my mate informed me that mixing diesel with petrol shouldnt do much damage it will just smoke more, however putting petrol through a diesel motor is not a great idea.

Not sure what effect the diesel would have on the injectors but the fact you rode 8 miles seems positive. If i were you i'd syphon all the fuel out and put in 98 octane and try to get the new fuel through the fuel pump.

Good luck!!

The main problem I have is in stuck in work till Monday (9am till 11pm) so can't do anything but if I don't sort it I'm royally fucked as I can't get to work! Am now badgering everyone that I know who owes me favours to get it sorted :/ BALLS!

Right it's not a big deal you have about 6 liters of diesel in your tank. If it was mine I would fill up with unleaded and start with the aid of that either stuff you get in a can. I did worse than that how about 25 liters in a f 800 GSA ride till stopped drain tank into car fill with petrol and run on either till smoke clears. No probs. JJH

Why not? Doesnt take long to stick a tube in the tank and siphon the fuel out and then refill.

better diesel in a petrol at least it just stops with little damage, now petrol in diesel that is much more fun and tends to cost a lot more to put right

The effect is that the petrol knackers the seals in the pump - very expensive as it usually means a new pump, fuel lines plus the fitting, setting up etc . Okay if you realise before you start the engine so that the fuel is only in the tank... Once you start it and it sucks the blend through the lines you are stuffed.

That is the petrol in a diesel issue and it's bad because the diesel pump relies on the lubricating properties of diesel. Petrol doesn't have any lubricating properties whatsoever.

The OP has a diesel in a petrol issue which isn't serious. As has been said, syphon out the mixed fuels, refill with petrol and try to start it. If you have jump leads and a nice convenient car hook it up so that you don't knacker the battery if it happens to take a lot of churning on the starter. I would only crank for about 10 seconds at a time and then leave it a minute for the starter to cool. Then repeat as required.

These bikes will run on pretty bad fuel so if you leave a litre or two of diesel in there and fill up with petrol it will still be fine. Rock the bike back and forward a couple of times to mix it all up.

I once put 40 liters of petrol in my alamhara I realised my mistake and filled up the rest of the way with diesel it was 2 am I was collecting my wife from hospital. I took a chance. It's still working 2 years later JJH

Ok grand not as bad as I thought it would be then, thank fuck for that, have a mate working on it tomorrow for me, says it won't take more than an hr or two, cheers guys

Calling Wapping to the Batphone ....:D

I have Wapping's old 2006 GSA which he brimmed with diesel in France in 2007. He spotted his mistake before starting the bike, drained the tank, fitted new plugs and filled with unleaded. 70,000 miles later, still going strong.

& I ran it for some time (Herts to S London) before I realised what id done.
Tank drained and filter changed - back to perfect within 24 hrs

Ditto. On the A68 last August on my way back from Italy. "Shall I chance it for the last 50 miles or so ... fuel's getting low". When a petrol station hove into view!

Feck! Bugger! Feckity feck feck feck!

Would be interested in views re changing the fuel filter. The bloke who sooked out the tank (for a £100) said don't bother but it continued to burp and hiccup occasionally long after. It may be that it needs several tanks to flush the filter through. I laid the bike up shortly afterwards.

there has been a view that the lambda probes get gunked up somehow for a while, sounds like most just fill with petrol and get on with it but maybe a check is warranted if you get persistent issues?

Yeah , should have made it clear i was responding to the comment about 'putting petrol through a diesel not a great idea'
cheers
