We've just been advised of a new review for 'Tortillas to Totems'. It's from the US magazine Adventure Motorcycle. Happy? It's 600 words of good stuff, written by Americans about a book about their own backyard. I do say what I think about the USA in the book so when I get a good review from the US, I can't help but be happy.
Every time this happens it just goes to show that we shouldn't think only what the mainstream press tells us we should think. Even more appropriate at the moment no.
Got time? Check the excerpts from the review out here: http://www.sam-manicom.com/ttreviews.htm
Now you can see why I'm so chuffed :bounce1
Have a great weekend :)

I can;t decide if Sam Manicom pisses me off or not? :comfort

I think Yes cos he does nothing but advertise his wares but contribute nothing except his sponsorship of the site

It's the same with about 3 or 4 other forums I go onto

Okay Sam what about a couple of free chapters to make it interesting to see if we want to buy the book?:augie

I mean I've followed Tsiklonaut and would buy the book to have the words to the pictures as he has shared his trip

I'm surprised Callum's Road Raasay to Callum's Road Gambia is not yet printed or maybe it is somewhere? ;)

Ouch Jaythro. Hope I'm not peeing you off for real. :blast Wish I had more chance to be just me on the forums. I do read a lot of the posts but never reply unless I have something useful to say - not often :augie

The rest of the time I'm either article or book scribing or on the road to and from somewhere. But I understand. Perhaps I should back off. I'll do it. Don't want to be seen to be taking the mick.

I am working hard at promoting the books now though, so perhaps that's what's going wrong here. Trouble is, I wrote and we produced all 4 books in a 6 year period and that didn't allow much time to get the word out. Need all the help I can get now, so I really value the help of the forums. Whose permission I have asked. Wouldn't be posting otherwise...

Tis the price of self publishing - no marketing team of experts behind you to do this stuff, or a huge marketing budget. When the publishers told me my first book wouldn't sell because I'm not a media personailty, I set out to have a go at proving them wrong. Overlanding and adventure travel, to my mind, are not the sole domain of the famous. Most of us are ordinary people who have been lucky enough to escape no? And well, here we are, 4 books on - most of which have sold through word of mouth. The forums are very helpful for this. Perhaps I've even helped publishers to see that you don't need to be a star, just have to have a good tale and be able to tell it.

In return for all the help I have had over the years, I have spent quite a bit of time encouraging and informing others who have been on trips how to go about getting their manuscripts into print. Not easy and there's lots to learn. It's a completely new adventure but well worth following. If you have the time and energy. The day my first book Into Africa became a success, for me, was when I had an email from a guy who'd made it down as far as Kenya. Quote, 'I'm here and having a brilliant time. I thought if an idiot like you could do it, so could I. Thanks!'

Free chapters? Great idea - guess all the extracts on the website for the books aren't enough eh. Have you got a Kindle or an i-pad? If you have, we have the books set up in e-book format now and you can read the first chapters of each of the books before deciding whether to buy or not. Hope that helps. e-books are a great way to take a read out with you on a bike trip. OOPS  here I go again.

But here's an idea. In conjuntion with Kite Studios of Cambridge, we have been recording the first chapter of Into Africa. That's due to go onto the website shortly. No need to read it even then. Shall I post to let you know when that's up?

Callum's Road? I've not heard if its being put into print. It should be though eh. Inspirational story. I hope it makes it.

And now I've realised that I've been rattling on:blagblah Sorry. I talk a lot as well as write a a lot...

Anyway, if I am ticking people off by posting news on the books - just say and I'll back off. Like I said - really don't want to take the Mick
Cheers for now,
Sam

Come on mate, not everyone who rides a bike is a brain dead idiot.

I don't even watch the news or read papers and can think for myself.

Al.

Absolutely!!!! Funny how we still seem to have that rep in so many quarters though eh. But that's not what I meant at all.

What I meant is that it bothers me how many people think Americans are a nation of jingoistic idiots. THEY are the ones who rely on what the press says and not on level conversation and a broad spread of info.

It's actually one of the reasons that I value being a motorcyclist so much. I find there are far more people amongst motorcyclists who have the ability to read between the lines and find the real info, than I meet in so many other places.

I was complimenting an American mag for reading the whole book and for not just concentrating on sections and turning themselves off before they made it all the way. I've had emails from people who have done just that -This was a comment from a reader in the US 'Some of the things you discuss could cost you some fans in this country. The USA never makes "mistakes"!' And that is the image that so many outside the US have of it and its people. Not true - thankfully:)

Good one Sam, no wonder you're chuffed!:clap

Thanks mate. Big smiles here :D I'm really happy to have this review.

And now, I'm off to make a curry! And tomorrow, I'm working on Libby who is sulking after being brought back out into the air after a year. Hmmm...

Thanks

Thanks Sam for sharing your good news, you did post it on the Vendors page so I believe it is an honest bump for your product.

As for you contributing to this site and members, I for one owe you not least for your inspiration from your books but also your generosity. You opened your home and fed me, Phill and Bert on our trip to Mali. I didn't know you from Adam then, you are a genuine traveller and biker and I wish all the luck with your adventures.. although you do remind me of my old Wu Shu Master:rob.

Oh and stripping your own bike at four in the morning to fix my bike was pretty cool too...:beerjug:

What is it with this website. There is the world of people that get off their arse and ride beyond these shores, write books, talk at events, often they're on a budget and ride bikes that don't cost a years wages because you don't need such bikes to do these trips.

First it was Simon and Lisa Thomas who got slammed, now Sam Manicom. Who next, Austin Vince, Chris Scott?

I know quite a few people who have either left this forum to go out and actually do some riding or have jumped ship over to ADVrider because like the aforementioned they also go out and ride to interesting places instead of bitching like a bunch of menopausal women.

Just saying!

Once upon a time my life was heading in the direction where I was going to "do a Sam" (or Ted, or Lois, or Dan, or Vince), but I'm not going to in that way now, things move on. But Sam is one of lifes' genuine nice guys, just out to do what he does and earn an honest bob or two along the way. So the odd post on here to flog his well-written books? Yeah, I go with that. So the Jaythros can just shuffle off.:)

Keep posting, and keep promoting. If a biker who writes (good,) adventure travel books can't come on a to a GS forum to spread the word about them, then something's very wrong.
What you say about self-publishing should make people think a bit more - you're trying to help maintain a lifestyle/career most of us would kill for, and it's a brave and tough choice.
Good luck, and I hope to read more of you on here when you have the time.:thumb2

Well that answers my question then ...... Okay You keep posting Sam

I haven't read Sam's Books I haven't the money or wherewithal to go travelling SO I just do what I do and get by day by day, I don;t do amazon or Kindle or tapatalk

Good Luck Sam and I mean that, You go ahead and keep posting But "May I suggest that you include a link to your excerpt pages on your site of some juicy bits" and to show I am not a cnut as a couple of chaps insinuate above

Here's Some code (Below) to copy into the "signature" part in your user control panel

Excerpts from Into Africa .... Under Asian Skies .... Distant Suns .... Tortillas to Totems .... And a link to the book galleries

Hi Sam,

I will be ordering a copy of Tortillas to Totems as a raffle prize at the Banham weekend at the end of this month. Hopefully someone else will be inspired by your writing too. :thumb

Great idea:clap although some of us have the 'signatures' turned off for a variety of reasons:blast

Hi Jaythro,
Sorry for not having responded sooner. Been on the move, and trying to get Libby sorted before the BMF this week. She's supposed to be on show there but I've been having all sorts of niggles with her. She's not liked her enforced time off the road for the last year. That's meant all my spare time has been spent trying to get her sorted. Well, success - sort of. At least she's now going to be at the show! Happy :) SO pleased to be riding again!!! Just had a great one on a beautifully sunny morning.
But I'm side tracking! I have been worried that I might be ticking people off with my posts so I'm really glad that as a result of your post, I find I'm not! You helped me to answer this question. And, what a great idea re the links to the excerpts! I really should have thought of that myself. Thanks for the code too. Hopefully this will show up on this post - having said that, I'm not known for my IT ability, so breath is being held as I write :type
All the best,
Sam

And now, a HUGE thanks to Mr K, Timolgra, Jonny Wave, Everywherevirtually, David Hale, Oscar India and Monty, and everyone who has PMd me. I'm really chuffed to read your posts and messages on this. The stand is opposite BMW - nice spot!
All the best and thanks again.
Cheers,
