OK, so I'm really chuffed. Had to post this : )

I'm still on 'Under Asian Skies' at the moment, bit of a slow reader but will get through them eventually :thumb2

Enjoying the books no end, thanks Sam

:beerjug:

I'm surprised Callum's Road Raasay to Callum's Road Gambia is not yet printed or maybe it is somewhere? ;)

I hope you don't mind the slight hijack Sam and well done on the great review :)

Gert had been starting work on putting a book together, as I'm sure you know he sadly had an accident on his bike last year with tragic consequences.

Something may (I hope) still come to fruition but not in the short term.

Andres

Send my regards to Les as well:beerjug:

Another of lifes truely good guys.

Will do. He's a great bloke isn't he. I've a lot of time for him. Trouble is, every time I'm on the stand I buy stuff. He has far too many worthwhile things doesn't he! There - plug for Les and Traveldri from both of us. They deserve it eh :thumb2

Hi Andres, no I don't mind at all. I'm delighted you have. I had heard about Gert. Really bad news. I do hope something will come together with the book. A fitting legacy and an encouragement for the project too. Let us all know if something does happen please.

What is it with this website. There is the world of people that get off their arse and ride beyond these shores, write books, talk at events, often they're on a budget and ride bikes that don't cost a years wages because you don't need such bikes to do these trips.

First it was Simon and Lisa Thomas who got slammed, now Sam Manicom. Who next, Austin Vince, Chris Scott?

I know quite a few people who have either left this forum to go out and actually do some riding or have jumped ship over to ADVrider because like the aforementioned they also go out and ride to interesting places instead of bitching like a bunch of menopausal women.

Just saying!

Agree completely. In fact Sam's book into Africa motivated me to get off my arse and do it, though in a smaller fashion.

Same, keep writing and keep pitching your books!

Ed

I'm only halfway thru the first chapter but I like your writing style and quite frankly I foresee a collection growing

Thank you

Jay

Hi Jaythro, well... howzit going? Finished yet? Awful read or do I have a convert to my tales of the road? Blimey, I hope it's the latter...:bounce1

Very Good Sam I enjoyed the Book and Was amazed at the Overtime your gaurdian angel put in

A Map of travels is a possibility on the website with the new Google maps doofer

I was playing with one for a forum here t'other day

But We need to sort that code in your sig line first

Another vote for Sam and his fellow adventure bike writers to continue telling their amazing stories.

He did a LOT of work for thr HUBB meet at Ripley, and if you didn't already know neither he nor any of the other speakers there get paid for their time and effort.

As an aside Sam, do you get as much from sales of your books on a Kindle as you do from a paper copy? I was chatting to Paddy Tyson who wasn't too complimentary about Amazons pricing policy...

I LOVE my Kindle, but do agree we ought to be supporting the likes of Les at Traveldri by buying books from them and not the global monsters. (Hasten to add I did hand over more beer tokens to him at the hogroast over the weekend. Again. :) )

Hi Jaythro, I did get away with an awful lot I shouldn't have didn't I. To quote a customer, I'm a bit of a 'disaster magnet'. Stuff seems to happen to me all the time. And people ask my why I'm not running tours. Love to, but I'd probably spend most of the time leading people into jail or the local hospital! :augie Adventure touring of a different kind eh. Shouldn't think there would be too many takers. Mind you, there is a company running bike tours in Iraq now - guarranteed armed guards!?

Map of travels? Very interesting. I'll look into that. Love new ideas.

But ahh, the signature code. I owe you. Wonder why the last version didn't work properly. No, don't tell me. I'm sure I'd not understand. Thanks for putting me right on this :thumb2

AND Many thanks also for doing that post on the US forum. I very much value that. For the likes of me without a huge publishing company with all their trained publicists and the like, this sort of help is invaluable. Cheers!!!! :beerjug:

Hi Dave, Many thanks for the thumbs up on writing and on HU. Good weekend eh. Helping out? My way of giving something back. I enjoyed so many of the HU Meets for so many of years. I also like working with all the other people who volunteer. Good people.

Hmmm, earnings from ebooks v paperbacks. It's a very complicated subject really. I had a huge learning curve on this and made it through thanks to the help of friends such as Iain Harper from www.heartwooddigital.com

The amount you earn depends on who you go with. Amazon, I-books etc. They are all very different. I've gone with e-books for two reasons. 1) So many people who have already read my books asked me to so they could travel etc with them. Nice! 2) Because its horribly expensive to ship books from the UK to the US and that almost prices my books out of reach for readers in North America. Especially with the way the economy is in the US now. If it weren't for the likes of Aerostich then few Americans or Canadians would have read any of them.

I decided that if I was going to go the e-book route, I wanted what went on sale to be as good as any main stream publisher was going to produce. This attitude has affected the mark up on my paperbacks too, but I can't see any point in doing anything half cocked, unless you have no choice. So, I paid an expert to set them up for me. Well worth it, but it'll take quite a few sales for me to pay this off/balance the cost out. Happy with that. At the moment I'm not making anything on them but I hope that in a couple of months I will be.

The big companies such as Amazon are out to make money, not to provide a service. So doing this through them is not an instant wallet filler. But it is allowing me to get the books on sale, somehow, in the US and Canada. Got to be good in the long run. Paddy is right. The amount you earn, when you follow the rules as you have to, isn't brilliant. One thing people don't think about is that we get paid our percentage (and they make it very obvious how much you can charge) in US Dollars. That means we have to pay for the exchange at the bank...

But, looking into all of this in advance, I was and am still sure that its the thing to do. Why have the books written and the reviews good (thankfully) and then the books not being accessible? And once I'd played with a Kindle, I was convinced that they are a great bit of kit.

Ahh but Les Madge from www.traveldriplus.com I owe him a lot. He really sticks his neck out to help we overlanding types. Huge knowledge of what we should be carrying/ equipment we should be buying. I very much value that he invites me to book sign on his stand at the bike shows etc. I've had offers to book sign at shows from much bigger companies with much higher profiles, but I'm happy sticking with Les and his wife Jane. If they hadn't given me the leg up of taking the risk to have me on their stand, perhaps my books wouldn't have sold as well as they have/are, so... I'm delighted to see that you think the same re them. I know many do. I don't know of anyone who has had bad info or bad service from the two of them. Glad you gave me the chance to blow their trumpet for a moment!!!

OK, enough rattle from me. B****y authors. Can't stop 'em when they start can you :augie

Thanks again for the post. Apologies for rattling at you.
Cheers,
Sam :thumb2

Self Promotion

Met Sam at Touratech event earlier this year. Liked him and enjoyed chatting to him. Bought his first book Into Africa and bloody loved it. I'm now working my way through the rest.

At least sam is honest about being an author. Others on this site pretend to provide things at cost or for next to nothing, out of love of motorcycling, for fellow bikers etc and the reality is that it's a load of bollocks . The things they makes and supply are in reality, their business and UKgsers the outlet. Whilst I accept that as marketing I don't like like the bull s--t!

Bobster, this sort of feedback is brilliant to have, and really helpful with getting the word out about the books. Word of mouth feedback is just the best isn't it. Thank you very much. :beerjug: I'm delighted you are enjoying my books. Had a pretty nutty time out there eh. Ahhh, overlanding ... :)

Hope all's good with you.
Cheers, Sam
