There have been a number of threads about the 1100GS starter making a noise and it being just down to character. Mine has all of a sudden started making the whirring noise when the bike is running. As a mate and I intend to hit Europe next year, have I anything to worry about. ( 1999, 1100GS with 42000 miles on it. Little service history but was going a belter when I bought it two years ago:D)

Could be the started bendix has gummed up and isn't disengaging properly. Whip the starter off and give it a good clean.

Have you tried to start it since it made the noise,if the starter has run for any length of time with the engine running it will most likely be fecked as well as the ring gear :blast

Hopefully you won't have to go down this route but I would just like to give you the heads up on a replacement cost.

I recently replaced my starter motor with a reconditioned unit from Motorworks it worked out at £115 with them taking my old unit.

Food for thought anyway.

Thanks Bandit, at least it gives me a ball park figure :thumb2

Might be worth contacting a local auto electrician to see if you can get yours repaired. From what i have seen these are either bosch or valeo units if you want to letme know the part number on the starter i can let you know if the parts are available as we do this type of work but not local to you.

Starters

What ever happend to kick starters?.

They all fell off with the vibration. :D

Try James Sherlock - Without checking I'm sure I bought a new Valeo starter motor for not much more than £115, though they were on offer at the time. ABS low voltage fault now fully cured. My starter motor began to run on for a second or two after the engine started. Even in the short while this lasted before I renewed the starter there was some slight marking on the flywheel, so I'd be inclined to sort it sooner rather than later. Have kept cleaned original as a spare.
