As I moved over to the Darkside iMac about 6 weeks ago I am not even going to try and work Garmin on my system. Most of my biking pals and fellow Tossers seem to say buy a notebook and use it just for my Garmin routes?

So which one ? It must go in my spam tin top box!:)

I have a iMac and a iPad just wish they would use mapsource !
Even the new iPad with USB and the like will not do it I don't think?

Ideas or links please, want to plan some UK and Europe routes next Month.

Ta Big D:)

use road trip or base camp on the imac.

unless you need to take the notebook with you it's economic madness + it'll be small and fiddly to do the job comfortably at home, compared to the imac.

I run MapSource on my Samsung NC10 with no problems at all, I also take it with me on tour just in case I need to upload additional waypoints - :thumb

+1 NC10 or my new N150P

Very similar to the NC10, my Acer Aspire One netbook does Mapsource fine. Available for about £200. It won't have a DVD drive so either use an external one or download the data files from the web.

If it is an intel based iMac just use Bootcamp to install Windows.

here we go again, i know a lot will be fed up with this , but if i install windows through bootcamp? will i not be up for all that virus checking and virus getting , again?

All i want to do is use my garmin not botherd about taking a laptop with me? even, i can load enough onto my 660 and as stated in this thread i would find the notebook fiddly etc whilst making routes.

But I just need to view and create routes on my imac or (notebook) if I must
Wish i knew a apple geek close to me who could come and help me sort a few issues/understand Rang Apple support but all I end up with is script readers!

keep idea's coming

cheers

download road trip and/or base camp from garmin and have a play.

they can be a bit of a head fcuk after using mapsource, but it's not that bad. it's FREE, and if you don't like it, you can do it another way :nenau

I have an Acer Aspire One with Windows 7 Starter and Mapsource runs fine (only got a Zumo 550 though).

Had to install it by copying the files on the DVD to an external hard drive and then installing from there.

Another for the Samsung NC10 :thumb

A great piece o' kit ... I don't even bother to try using the Mac now!

Tough piece of kit too... been upside down on the Karakorum Highway, loads rough miles on unmade roads in Turkey, Iran and Pakistan ... it just seems to take it all in its stride. Also great for downloading photographs when on a trip :thumb

You're not far away Derek ... come have a look at mine

Thanks for the info lads,I will be getting the Acer tomorrow evening.Cheers Francis

I had the choice of Win 7 Starter or the full version of XP. I went with XP as I have an existing desktop & ancient laptop that both run XP. Seemed sensible to me, as I can use the same software on all 3 machines and don't have to learn my way around a new operating system, and one that is crippled at that.

Yes if you are connected to the internet. You could disable ethernet and wireless in windows if you just want to use mapsource, but internet will be handy for downloading way points. Stick on avast freebee anti-virus www.avast.com and you should be go to go, and if you aren't using windows for emailing/browsing virus exposure should be low, especially if you are behind a firewall.

Parallels is a good suggestion too, especially as no reboot necessary. Virtual Box is a free alternative, less full featured but will get the job done. Save a copy of the newly installed windows with mapsource installed container file and if you do get a virus later, delete and restore the pristine one.

So it would appear the there is no problem running Mapsource on a netbook. Has anyone managed to update their maps on it?
I am just about to get a Samsung NB30 and the maps on my Zumo have been updated from the ones on the DVD that came with it. I want the same version of mapping on the netbook so I will have to download the update to it from myGarmin. A chap at Garmin is telling me that this will most likely fail as netbooks are not supported (?). I intend to ditch W7 starter and put W7 professional on it (to keep it the same as my business network). Any thoughts?

I have XP Home on my Samsung netbook and had no problems installing the mapping, did a download from my myGarmin account for my StreetPilot and also installed a 2011.20 update for my Nuvi, to device and netbook, as well. All worked as expected.

Great stuff. I didn't think (even with the stripped down W7 that netbooks seem to ship with) the OS would be a hurdle.
Still, when the postman brings my new Sammy, I'll be able to attack it with confidence! The Mapsource installation files I already have on an external USB drive, so ready to go!
Cheers
