I think I must be in dim-wit mode today!

Having just gone from Windows to Mac I'm trying to get the maps onto the new computer. Easy hey! Nop! I have the original disk for NT Europe that came with my 660 and I've been able to install those without any difficulty. I then wanted to download an update that I bought from from Garmin's website (I'm going back a couple of years.) I can see that update in myGarmin but no option to re-download it. So I'm thinking - no need for that - the maps are all on the 660 - I'll just copy them down to the new PC.:thumb2

Can I work out how to do this - no sh1t I can't! I'm normally pretty good with Garmin's little pecadilloes but this one's got me stumped.

Somebody put me out of my misery, please?!

One time map updates from Garmin can only be downloaded for 12 months after purchase ISTR.

You can't download maps off of the GPS to your computer, only in the other direction, sorry.

Options open to you as follows:

Ring Garmin and explain, they may make the download available for you again.

Buy a new update, lifetime mapping (that's lifetime of the GPS, not you) can be had for about £50 from Handtec. You will always have the most recent mapping available for download.

Basecamp should be able to read and use the mapping on your USB connected GPS. Takes a while for it to do this and is a PITA. Better than no mapping at all though.

PC to PC transfers are possible with a third party utility, not PC to Mac though.

Appears that I was wrong about PC to Mac transfer, see, if you haven't already, thread started by derbymeg on the very subject.

You could use this link if you have the maps including updates on a PC and want to transfer to a Mac.

I'd already tried derbymeg's solution but in my case it wouldn't work. It only converts maps that are too old to be mac - compatible. Because mine are from 2011 they were, so the Map convert solution just bypasses these, and they are the ones I want.

Looks like the only way is to buy an update. Let's see if the January sales bring any particularly good bargains!

Thanks for your help guys.

You could try ringing Garmin and explaining the situation. In the past they've made older mapping available for download in such circumstances. However, the customer support seems to be less than it was.

Certaininly on a windows PC, using bascamp, if you connect your zumo to the PC, load basecamp up, then on the drop down box for maps, it will see the maps you have on your zumo, select that map.
You can then use that map within basecamp, all routes/waypoints saved are saved directly to the zumo.

This is the preferred method I now use

dxtans

Well, I finally had to except defeat, it can't be done! I know dxtans method works but when I'm planning routes away from home - often on the train - I don't want to be carting my Zumo everywhere with me.

The solution has ended up being a lifetime update from Garmin which I probably needed anyway, but it has allowed me to put maps on both the PC and the Zumo.

I've done a thread elsewhere but it's worth noting that Garmin was adamant when I spoke to them that they plan to withdraw the option to hold the maps on your PC with future map versions. This more than anything else was what spurred me on to buy the update now.
