Hi

I was doing a "one more day's warranty left" check on my 1200 GS (it's the bike's second birthday on saturday so I guess the warranty runs out friday), and I noted small amounts of oil in the problem places. The mileage is low - 1800 miles.

1) Under the transmission where it joins the engine there is a very light smear of greasy dirt. It is barely visible - it only really shows up at all because it is a localised smear of dirt - the transmission body is cleaner further away. The actual join around the side looks clean (for a two year old bike).

2) On the concertina rubber gaiter between the transmission and the final drive there is a thick gloopy grease you can see around the gaiter to transmission junction. This looks like its a normal part of the build. However, there is a hint of a thinner oil building up at the bottom of the gaiter. It might just have "breathed" out of the thick grease, or it might be the very beginning of something else. Is this where the famous drive seal failure would show a leak?

Both "leaks" really are minor. You would never notice them unless you were looking closely because your warranty was about to run out. Is that level of "leak" normal?

regards
Darren

Chances are that yes, they're normal.

Mine has had some big old leakages from time to time, particularly after hot days or when dropping down a couple of thousand feet on a mountain ride, and that's been happening for the last 56k miles :)

Wobble the top of the rear wheel laterally to check movement then wipe up oil, forget about it and ride it ;)

Go to your dealer and report it now.

If they say nah thats ok just make sure that it is dated and documented for future reference.
