Hi Guys,
My wife and I are in the Yukon on tour and we are having strange problems with her F650 Dakar i seek wisdom/ help or advice, iv been searching even on the chain chag site and am struggling....

It feels like your riding on mud. It sort of strays, The tire is a little square but not that bad, also there is a "werring" noise when you pull the clutch in: werr werrr werrr. AND AFTER you pull off there is a clunk you can feel it through the chain/ drive. You hear it again when you change into second but not after that. Its not really loud, in fact you cant really hear it when you have your ear plugs in.????

I thought of rear bearings but there is no play in the rear wheel... The chain isnt too slack, its a little worn but not too much..( you cant expose any teeth on the back sprocket) Its all lined up ok, the tire isnt seperating....??

Any ideas??? We are 1000 miles from BMW dealer and 400 miles from a Honda shop...

Someone suggested it could be the Sprocket Bearring????

i dont know if my wife should continue to ride it???

You've posted this in the wrong thread, there is one for 650 singles.

The clonk could be the sprocket hub bearing, it could also be the cush drive rubbers. Although I doubt either of these would give a whiring noise.

It's also worth checking the swingarm bushes, and front sprocket.

The feeling of being in mud, sounds similar to when my steering head bearings needed adjustment.

It could be that the noise was always there, and you've noticed it now you have a problem

OK.
Two things.
If the bike has a main stand, use that, if not find a way of getting the rear wheel off the ground. eg. lean it over onto the sidestand so the wheels clear and jam a piece of wood under the rh swing arm.

Spin the wheel, listening for any graunching sounds.
Rock the wheel, to check if there's any play. If there is, it's often the sprocket carrier bearing which goes first.

To check the sprocket carrier bearing, grab the sprocket and rock.
Also see if you can move it cw/acw, this will let you know if the cush drive rubbers have worn but they would have to be in very poor condition to give the symptoms you describe.

Good luck:thumb

I tried it

I did try that before and I couldn't feel any movement in either the wheel or sprocket. I can see thesprocket moving a 1/4 inch or so when she pulls off. Is that normal?imthinking the clunk maybe a tight spot on chain? But the ride issues may notbe related. I had the steering head bearings replaced less than 10k ago. I have had the bike on the centre stand and pushed and pulled all wheels etc I can't find any movement. Worreing rather than show stopping. At the moment!

Thanks for all advice. Iwill post whenwe get it sussed. 300 miles to town with a Honda dealer. Maybe they will slap me an obvious dignosis.

Up date on problems with the f650

So far we have disgnosed that the tires are showing considerable cupping ( according to the Yukon Yamaha guy) yes the tire was wearing but it didnt seem that bad.. Anyway we purchased some new rubber, Front and Rear, so far the wondering doesnt seem to be there. However the clunk on take off is still present, the Yamaha guy didnt have any answers and he had no time to spair to research it.. So our plans are to push on to Fairbanks and get a new chain and sprocket set and see if that resolves it..

We have only completed thirty mile: the tires seem to have fixed the wandering trick. The clunk and excessive chain/ drive noise is still present( the weering noise)The chain is wearing but again doesnt seem knakered. I cant (expose any of the teeth on the back sprocket test).I have checked it for tight spots, cant find any.. the sprockt teath are showing slight lean/curling, but only sightly ...

We are heading over the Top of the World Highway so i do hope it lasts...

Thanks for helping.:bow
