I'm in the Harz Mountains in Germany on the K12LT, and it seems like the final drive has developed a fault. There was a loud clunk on the autobhan, and now Its clunking as we go along, I can feel it through the foot pegs and hear a whining sound. Does anyone out there know of a good mechanic in the area?

my mate recently had a problem in that area (with his ducati) and was helped out. I have asked him for a name, will post here if he can give me any details as to what type of mechanic he was etc - no idea how good though, but may be a starting point!

Any good car truck workshop should be able to fix it as well- if its the final drive bearing the seal normaly goes and you get an oil leak. Put bike on centre stand and wobble it and spin it you will soon feel if its gone.

No oil leaks, you can feel a clunk through the pegs when riding, and hear a whining sound. Feels like a tyre with a bad flatspot. There's a bit of play when wobbling the wheel and its sounds a bit tough when rotating it by hand, so whatever the problem is I'm sure its in the FD. All began after a noticeable clunk at about 80mph whilst on cruise control, something obviously let go!

I think your adventure is just beginning. Bmw service in germany is pricy. Try finding a lical biker and adking him for local service . even a agricultural workshop should be able to sort it if its shaft or final drive issue. Good luck and drink lots.

Sharp intake of breath! May have little choice if I can't find a local mechanic.
