Hope someone can help - now got hold of a Macbook (Macbook 1,1) - made/released around early 2007 i believe. Came supplied with OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard installed (but no discs!). Looking to transfer piles of photos from my earlier G4 Mac hard drive - but can't find anything like I Photo on my new Macbook? - it was integral to OSX 10.3.9. Bit puzzled here - is the photo storage function now part of I Life? If so - is I Life an integral part of the Snow leopard package or an extra chargeable upgrade option?

Well I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard - and still have iPhoto

I photo was an integral part of OSX Panther 10.3.9 (released october 2003!)
What I'd like to know is why isn't it / or something very like it, isn't on OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard!

Think I must be missing something here.:eek

dunno ... maybe something to do with Snow Leopard being an upgrade and not a new operating system?

Sounds like whoever you bought it from reinstalled from the 10.6 disks. It would have come originally with ilife 06/7 on the build install, but the OS and the apps are sold separately from an upgrade point of view.

Thanks all - SH*T! :blast:augie Teach me to buy a second user machine - tight fisted skinflint that I am! :D

iphoto is part of iLife. If you just buy the os it doesn't come with it. It does come with every new machine when you buy it, as they all come bundled with ilife. If you do a new install from just the os disk onto a newly formatted drive (common security with second hand machines) it won't be in there.

You could download it from a torrent site, it's not legal but given that you've just bought a machine that you expected it to come with, you might feel justified in doing this.

Thanks J.

Sorted problem this afternoon. My G4 powermac running on OSX 10.3.9 has iphoto - just copied the relevant files onto a DVD and installed same on the Macbook - surprisingly & happily - iphoto launched without a hitch! :clap

Obviously the 10.3.9 (Panther) version of iphoto is quite happy running within 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) :D Now all I have to do is transfer a few thousand piccies from the G4 to the Macbook.

Thanks all.

Try using Migration assistant in snow leopard it works a treat and will copy all you files and applications from one computer to another :thumb

Just a thought - but why not put that lot onto a fast external drive and keep the performance of your Mac up?

Ok .......... I already have a 80Gb Firewire external drive. So .......... do I just drag & drop a copy of my 'pictures' folder from the powermac onto the external drive's desktop icon? Is it that simple?

When I hook up the external drive to the Macbook - open iphoto - how exactly do I get access to the transferred photos on the other drive?

Apologies for the dumb questions ...... :D

The migration assistant was fantastic when I was transferring stuff onto a new iMac.

Everything worked great after it with no problems synching iPods, Network settings, Eye TV, Internet settings and passwords. Couldn't believe it managed it all without a single hitch.

A tip for iPhoto is that you can create multiple iPhoto libraries by holding down the ALT key when you start iPhoto. You then have the option to create a new Library or choose one that you have worked on before. I often create a new or just a temporary one to upload all my photos from a day out then choose the best, export them and then open up my main iPhoto Library and import the best shots. I can then delete the temporary Library if I want. Just keeps my main Library better organised and saves having files in it that I don't want anymore. I also use my main iPhoto Library to upload photos to my Facebook, Flickr and Mobileme Accounts.
