Open face helmets

I've been meaning to get an open face lid for some time. Not being a fan of the flies in the teeth, bees up the nose experience I's like one with a visor.

Are the studs above the face aperture standard? In other words will any old visor fit, for example, a Shoei RJ Platinum?

... to replace a fairly aged Caberg; new Bell Jet looks good if you want 'old school' look, Aria X-Tend is good but expensive and no sun visor. Bell Mag 9 is a strong contender but has to be imported

In answer to the question, yes, pretty much standard. I've never really had trouble fitting visors peaks etc. However, visors from companies such as Bob Heath do come in small and large. Presumably due to the different circumference of the lid. The press studs on the visor are usually in a slot so can be moved to fit lid.

Open faced lids would seem to have become far more popular in recent years and as such there is a veritable smorgasbord of different types of visor available. Although they are mostly specific to the brand.

Not a true open face but I recently purchased a Schuberth J1.

A bit fiddly until you get used to it but a great real world helmet.

Terrific all round vision,comfortable,and imho unbeatable in bad weather.

Interestingly nearly every T de F outrider at the weekend were using open face helmets including the Gendarmes

Only the British bike cops were using full face

Nolan seemed the French helmet of choice

I imaging that riding in close proximity puts a premium on peripheral vision.

I can recommend the HJC IS-Multi. Got mine quite cheap (<£60).

Best of both worlds is a Shark Evoline 3 - just used mine for a 2,500 mile trip around France - 90% as an open face helmet and then converted to full face when it rained. Drop down sun shade is the real bonus

I've just bought my first ever open face, a Bell 500 which is a jet style and replica of the original Bell open face from the 60's. I ordered a bubble visor from eBay (Taiwan) and it fits fine. As Mr Melch says, they are all pretty much the same and the visors have poppers on slots that will fit different popper spacing on the lid.

The picture here should show what I mean



Gotta say though, it feels very weird after a life time of full face lids.

Yes, it does flip up out of the way.

Flip up at speed? I've only used it on the Tomos, so can only say that it's fine up to 25mph Although, the poppers are very secure and the hinges have a nice level of resistance so I can't imagine it would be an issue.

Indeed yes, but the helmet I fancy doesn't have one - hence the question.

I have a Shark Evoline 3, which spends 90% of it's life in open face mode. It's also relatively heavy.
I also have a Scorpion EXO-100 which has a removable peak and the visor slides up inside the shell. Comes with interchangeable clear and tinted visors.
As with any OF lid, the big advantage is excellent peripheral vision, the other being the reduced weight. I'm a part time instructor and always use the Shark in OF mode when instructing.

Back to the original question
Back in the olden days as a courier in London, I had an old red OF with the press studs but preferred to use goggles when out of town.
However, the press studs are pretty heavy duty and I never lost the helmet peak at motorway speeds

If not too late for you, I just got the Nolan N40. Brilliant, with visor, peak and drop down sun visor. Very comfortable and light.
