How many of you wear an open face helmet in the summer and what have you got. Was thinking about getting one mainly for my commute to work.

Summer?!!!

I have a system 4 and convert it to open-face as soon as it's not actually raining too hard. Been in open-face mode for a month now but always carry the chin-bar and visor at this time of year just in case.

I've got an old Cromwell which I used to use for trail riding, but on the road, I'd feel too vulnerable without chin protection. I use an MX helmet & get the best of both worlds.....plus the peak makes a great sunvisor.

Having had an 'off' last summer that resulted in my sliding along 25 yds of finely gritted road surface, all I can say is that the side of my crash helmet from the chin bar back was very badly scuffed. The visor pivit mechanism was even worn right away and the visor paper thin at that point.

I wear an open-face all year round, at present using a Bieffe Trial (2 years and about 30k miles). Previous was an Everoak (but I think they have gone the way of most British companies  ) and have just ordered an Arai Freeway.

Nearly had a Cromwell, well did have - won in a raffle, but the bu**er was a bit tight. Still someone had a bargain, didn't they Kev ;) :D

You could consider a Roof Boxer...I have two of them.

Unlike other flip front helmets, the front piece can be swung all the way round to the back of the helmet,so your head is not torn off at speed, yet you can still have the visor down if you wish.

I also sometimes wear a shorty 'Chips' style open face, which is surprisingly quiet.

I've got a Davida half face which I sometimes wear in the summer - but only really on short journeys around town cos it feels a little naked compared to a full face. Nice hat though, leather-lined and cool in an 'old school' kind of way...

Hi There,

I also use a system 4 with the chin piece removed. I tried it like this last spring and have never changed it back. When I upgrade to a system 5 I'll do the same.

Hi

Use an Arai Z2/C open face all year round now.

A few years back I had a first model BM flip front but found chronic misting problems in wet weather which meant raising the front thus losing the protection.

In the dry, I was never happy with the fit of the thing with the front down either.

Open face for me thanks. :)

my choice

i much prefer open to full face.
at the moment i use an "OGK" - cant remember the model, sorry.
very light, good visor, removeable lining, good vents. and a good carbon/kevlar etc shell.

best one i had before this was a Bell Tourlite (do a google / find a pic) its more often used by rally car drivers though. but it gives more face protection than most open lids (if you see a pic - you'll know what i mean). only hassle is actually getting your hands on one - they're not a big seller and they're expensive. lastly - the only place i know you can get a full visor for these is in the U.S.

i also use a Roof Boxer - its _nearly_ a brilliant lid / but it aint:rolleyes: - too heavy, cant remove / wash the lining and when used as a full face in rain - the visor leaks water in on the INside:mad: . curable perhaps with a bit of draft proofing tape, but at the price you shouldn't have to p1ss about.

Og.
buying a Tour X now for the rider training as i'm fed up mangling the radio mic. every time i flip up the chin bar. but i really didnt want to get a full face.;)

I would never wear an open face as they do not provide enough protection.

I have had 3 occasions where wearing an open face would have led to, IMHO, serious injury if not worse.

1 A front end wash out causing me to lad flat on my face. Result a cracked chin bar but no injury.

2 A high speed low side where at some stage I must have slid face down. Result was an almost ground away chin bar but no injury.

3 Hopefully a rare occurance; I had a brick thrown at me riding through an estate in London - it hit me in the chest and bounced up onto my chin bar. The fright it gave me nearly had me off but fortunatley no injury.

Just my 2p's worth but, to me any way, very good reasons to wear a decent full face.

Open vs. Full

ho hum...
this has been debated to death many times and not just here.
my 2 cents;
do a search of the topic on this site - you'll find all the pros and cons and make your own mind up.

What goggles do y'all use?

Any recommendations as my relatively new system 4 will be going open face soon

Goggles

Scott 89's are brilliant goggles... Comfy fit, vast choice of easily changeable lens, very good vision (unlike some of the stiffer framed 'top end' designs)

I've used them for 25 years and they have always brilliant!

As for open face.... I use an Arai MX3 Motocross helmet. It's got a removeable front section, so can give a minimal amount of full-face type protection when required. Would stop a stone or a small 'off' but not in the same league as a proper full face if you had a big impact.

Nice thing is, just 4 plastic screws, chuck the chin piece in your pannier, and you've got fresh air and true open face biking.... which is hard to beat in hot weather when your doing slow speed touring, or maybe a bit of Moroccan off-road trailing. (as we will be in 4 weeks)

You also still have the peak, which is invaluable in bright sunny conditions, and in my experience, with this helmet and my tour x is not in the least bit affected by the windflow at high speed. I've got a Wunderlich screen at the lowest setting.

I agree about the general vulnerability of open face helmets, and the Arai is a good compromise. List is £329 I think... If you ring Andy Hutch at www.1stmx.com and he'll probably do you a deal although you may well know some other friendly dealer. Andy will also sell you some Scott 89's if you need a supplier. I always carry two pairs, one with a tinted lens, and one with clear.

I wear an open face helmet all year round - an Arai Sz/m - an excellent, comfortable helmet. The visor is deep enough to allow me to ride in rain without the rain stinging my face.

Since getting the GS-PD I've bought an MDR motocross helmet, not just for the added protection but because of the peak. I found riding with the Arai difficult if the sun was low.

As to the open-face v full-face debate, I much prefer to be comfortable on a bike, and I don't find full-face helmets at all comfortable. I like the feel of wind in my face and usually ride with the visor up anyway. As to the danger side of things, I've attended a number of fatals and never had the riders suffered from facial injuries. I'm not saying it can't happen, but so can broken bones, broken necks and internal crush injuries. If logic played a part in our choice to ride motorbikes, we'd all be in big-bumpered Volvos.

It's your choice; you make the decision you're happy with.

Progrip, one pair with photochromatic and one pair with Amber.

When they are new they take a bit for the foam padding to bed in.

The Progrip strap works well, no slip at all.

They roomy enough to wear specs under if you need to or even sunglasses.

It makes no difference what you wear....

'cos when your numbers up,you go and that's your lot.Having said that,it doesn't matter a toss what it says on your hat,or whether it's a full face or open face,or if it cost a tenner or £500.If it doesn't fit your head, you might as well wear a woolly hat.I wear an aria freeway or freestyle or something, and it was the most expensive bleedin pi55pot in the shop,I only wanted to spen £30 as well:(
