Hi
I have an optimate 3, which i have connected to the battery on the GS

its a direct battery connection.

Looking at the BMW manual, it recommends using the special connector.

Is this the case, or do i go with what I've got

electrons don't give a shit what route they take, the shape of the connector etc - croc clips, a hard wired lead to the battery or a special lead with BMW logo and gold contacts will all get the same result: electrons from the mains into the battery via the Optimate

As you say it doesn't give a shit what route it takes well it likes to take the path of least resistance. Don't ask what that means I read if somewhere. JJH

Different electrons - the Optimate has a conventional iron-cored transformer which isolates the mains from the 12V DC circuit ;-)

BMW sell a fancy can bus compatible charger that plugs into an accessory socket. Optimate offer something similar. It's all fine for those who can't attach two simple wires to a plug or use croc clips. But expecting two separately coded electronic systems to coexist isn't impossible but it's another layer (or two) of potential for upset.
Keep it simple.
