Hey Gang,
I've been using an OptiMATE 4 on my 2014 R1200GS TE pretty much since I got the bike. Already having a number of older OptiMATE chargers for my other bikes I went for that particular model this time around because I can just plug it into the accessory socket and wouldn't need to wire anything to the battery, which seemed like a good solution.
It's been working fine, which is to say that I plug it into the socket, it clicks a couple of times as the CanBus relays are opened, then proceeds to charge / test / maintain in perfect silence. Recently however, my bike has started to make clicking noises every couple of minutes while the charger is plugged in, and I'm no longer confident it's working as it should.
I don't remember when this started happening - can't remember it coinciding with a recent service or anything - but there's a thread on R1200GS.info which sounds roughly like my situation. For what it's worth, I've filmed my OptiMATE 4 charging the bike for 10 minutes (yes, I know, it's so boring my camera nearly committed suicide) and you can see / hear the behaviour just after 03:00, 05:25, 06:20, 07:32 ...
Do you charge your GS with an OptiMATE 4? Does yours click as much as mine? Has it always done this? I really don't want to keep relying on it if it'll just end up draining my battery until I need to replace it, like with my older GS when I grew too complacent to share round the other charger a couple of years back. Advice most welcome.
Cheers,
Mark.
