Over here!
I have an Optimate 4 with a TM type connector. The TM-95 DIN connector cable doesn't work, so I assume my choices are either a canbus-friendly optimate, or a connection directly to the battery. If others know whether that is right i would be grateful. Also glad to understand why. Thank you

Only optimate 4 dual with canbus mode will fonction with this cable, because you must put Optimate 4 dual in canbus mode by connecting crocodile clips first, seems your optimate 4 is the simple one with no canbus mode, so direct to battery is only option, and in my opinion the best option, for better change, Din plug not always the best option.

My I suggest you fix an Optimate SAE connection direct to the battery and run your Battery Charger through it. This solution and one I have used for several years gives you an SAE power outlet when using the bike for USB, Air Pumps, heated gear etc etc and as a connection for a trickle charge/conditioner. Problem solved in one functional package. I would not be without mine, it was one of the first farkles to be added when I traded up from a 2018 GTL to a GSA TE ;-).

I too have this set up for the very same reasons you do rather than going via the aux socket and canbus, it's simple and reliable :beerjug:
