Anyone use an Optimate 6 through the fag lighter socket? I've seen all the stuff about switching between normal and Canbus modes on the Optimate 4, but can't find anything of similar relevance to the 6, either in the manual or here on the forum. When I plug it in, nothing happens except for the green power light coming on.

Any ideas?

Max.

Yeah I had that problem with the optimate 4, There were two types one with canbus switching and one without, both called optimate 4. It even told me how to change it over in the instructions. I would suggest that like me you have the other one. If it is new you may be able to swap it. I would be tempted to change it rather than connect it directly to battery as the canbus version limits maximum charge voltage to protect the canbus electronics.

Interesting - thanks for that, Robin.

If that's the case, the Canbus version would have to automatically detect that it was working via Canbus, as there's no mention of switching modes anywhere...

I'm not sure that I've seen them marketed as separate models either - most confusing.

Ta,

Max.

I may be wrong but I think the optimate 6 has a larger charge output pos 6 amp for us on cars.
So does not have a canbus facility.
Please check on the optimate site for the correct opinion.

Thanks William,

The Optimate site is somewhat ambiguous. It doesn't specifically state that it's designed for Canbus, but then it gives the following as an optional accessory - 'cigarette lighter plug lead (02) to charge via the cigarette lighter or DIN socket (as found on some BMW, Honda & Triumph touring motorcycles)'

It would be kinda strange to give that as an option if it wasn't designed to work...

Quoted output current = 0.4-5.0 Amps.

I'm still confused.

A-ha - I think I've cracked it. So, in the unlikely event that anyone else is interested, here it is...

It appears that (as with the BMW charger) it can't 'read' the system if the ignition has been turned off for more than 15 minutes. So, briefly turning the bike on and off again (like with most things these days) cured the problem - battery being charged as we speak.

Incidentally, the Tecmate website (although not the UK Optimate one) does specify that the 6 is designed for use with motorcycles...

Glad you got it sorted
