hi guy,s im new to the forum and just purchased my first BMW in 45 years of biking and loving it.i have the 2021 R 1250 GS ADVENTURE and wanting to fit the optimate charging lead to the battery when the bike is not being used.could you tell me if the red cable attached to the frame next to battery is a extention of the positive lead from the battery or do i need to take battery out completly to connect the cable to the battery.

You need to remove battery and connect to the terminals, the red post is for jump start ISTC

Welcome to the forum. Yes you are best to remove the battery(easy job) and attach it directly and then leave the ‘tail’ connector in a convenient position for future connections.

you can connect things to this post, at least you can on my R1200RS as it has a threaded terminal. The electrons won't give a shit if they have to travel a few more cm to the battery.

If the Optimate is the CAN-bus compatible type it came with a plug that will fit in the AUX outlet on the right hand side of the TFT. This outlet will accept the charger.

It does indeed serve that purpose, but it also provides a convenient point to connect ancillary equipment without the difficult fiddle of reaching the concealed battery positive terminal. So yes, an optimate charging lead can be connected on the aforementioned post.

It should be able to plug in like this if it is canbus compatible.

same as post 4 have camera optimate attached, and have use jump start no problem in 4 year.

I attach my battery charger to the red post using the crocodile clips - saves having to remove battery. All seems to work OK - readings on the charger are consistent with how they've always been on other bikes. As and when I need to remove the battery I will attach the flying leads.
